"What an AWESOME surprise! First, I would like to say thank you. When the box arrived, I didn't pay any of the paperwork any attention. I was so busy trying to get to the dress. I must say that I do look "fabulous" in it, to say the least. My mom ordered it for me to wear to my junior prom. I am also getting ready to compete for Connecticut's Outstanding Teen in June and I just used the dress to take a picture wearing my sash and crown. We will definitely be ordering again!"

Saturday Do: Do Something That Scares You
Saturday Do:
You dream and you dream but when the moment comes to actually “doing,” you become scared; tip-toeing back into your zone of comfort. This Saturday’s Do is a bit different. Do something that scares you.
Try a new food

Perhaps you’ve always wanted to live in a new city, planning it down to the spots you’ll frequent in that new city. Maybe you’ve always wanted to immerse yourself in a new hobby or maybe you’ve been (im)patiently waiting and hoping for love to come your way. It’s time to take a leap for yourself. When that moment arrives, a physical and emotional elevation occurs and all of a sudden you can’t breathe.
Write a letter to a ‘long lost’ someone

So move to that new city, publish that book, write that letter, try a new food. On a regular basis, do the things that scare you. On the other side of that scary moment, you’ll find a fulfilling life.
Make that move

Eye-Opener: Danielle Butzon
Today’s eye-opener segment comes from our very own, Danielle Butzon. Her favorite part of the day? Seeing the gorgeous New York City skyline, of course.
NYC Skyline
When I come into the city every morning, seeing the sun rise over the NYC skyline inspires me. Even though it is the smallest part of my day, it's my favorite and it lets me know my day will be good.
Lenka
Lenka is an Australian singer/songwriter. It wasn't until recently that I discovered her music and realized she writes a lot like me. I am an aspiring singer/songwriter as well and Lenka inspires me to express how I am feeling through my music.
Love
Everything about love inspires me. From the first time you meet a person, to the butterflies you get , all the way to the heart wrenching break ups. That is where most of my inspiration comes from when I write. I feel like love is a crucial part of life and without it, life would be boring and meaningless.

Eye Openers: Brie Schmidt
This week’s Eye Opener segment comes to us courtesy of our lovely Brie Schmidt. We hope Brie’s list inspires you in some way. It sure inspired us!
1) Vincent Van Gogh
I really enjoy modern art, and one of my favorite artists is the well known, Vincent Van Gogh. I've seen a good number of Van Gogh's paintings in Amsterdam, Paris, London, New York, Philly, and Salt Lake City and feel truly blessed to be able to experience seeing all the various collections made by this talented man. From self portraits, to abstract paintings of landscapes and flowers, he always stuck with his personal art style. The vision of the unique colors and fine detailing in his work is so fascinating and gives me a lot of appreciation for art, colors, expressionism, as well as ideas, insight and inspiration with colors and the choices I make with things in my life from home decor to fashion choices.
2) Sunglasses
Sunglasses are my must have and favorite accessory. They simply make a bold statement to your everyday outfit and are even better on makeup less days!
3) Nicole Richie
I've always adored Nicole Richie's evolving style since she was infamously known as the wild, party girl on her former reality series, The Simple Life. The fact that the chameleon is never afraid to experiment with new trends, blending various of fashion pieces, accessories, hair color, and footwear, yet manages to feel comfortable is such an inspiration. She may be a true boho chic at heart, being spotted in a lot of her own designer pieces by her fashion lines, Winter Kate & House of Harlow 1960, however they aren't the only things she has in her wardrobe. She blends the boho-inspired pieces with some amazing edgy, rocker chic clothing & accessories, and occassionaly sports the old hollywood glamour look on the red carpet. Nicole's aesthetic and unique style has a strong influence on my daily personal style and inspired me to not just stick to one trend, but have fun and mix things up, yet still be comfortable & look effortlessly stylish!

| Hey Sugar |
|
|
Hey, Sugar!
Break out that jar or industrial size sugar stash you’ve been stowing away in your cabinet. This granulated sweetener is good for more than just baking. A little bit can actually make your skin glow. Who says sugar isn’t good for you?!
Smooth your kisser

Blend a little jojoba or olive oil with caster sugar (also called superfine sugar; you can also make this by putting regular granulated sugar in the food processor for a minute) and a touch of peppermint or vanilla extract, if you like. Place some of the paste on your lips, massage and lick off. Yum!
Make a body scrub

Sugar makes for a splendid exfoliating agent for body scrubs. You can make a super simple one by mixing sugar with oil (canola, almond, jojoba, or olive all work well) to create a loose paste. Add some essential oil or vanilla extract if you like fragrance. Gently rub on your skin and then rinse off in the shower.
Extend your lipstick

Sprinkle a bit of sugar atop freshly applied lipstick, let it sit, then lick it off. This works to set the lipstick and will extend the application.

Lillian Bassman Exhibit

Photography legend Lillian Bassman, who passed away this past February at the age of 94 once said, "the same techniques in Photoshop as I did in the darkroom," dismisses both romantic notions of film's purity and digital fantasies of amazingly-manipulated images. One look at her black and white photography and you’re absolutely hooked. The former Harper's Bazaar art director explained the shift in her career as a simple tool upgrade, "the palette has changed, the end result is the same."

Bassman’s work will be on exhibit throughout May 26th at the Staley-Wise Gallery. The exhibit–featuring experimental reprints of her early work from the 1940s–is based on the late photographer’s book, Lillian Bassman: Lingerie.
Where: Staley-Wise Gallery
560 Broadway, at Prince St. (

Making Waves: JASZ COUTURE
For over 20 years, Jasz Couture has been designing prom dresses and gowns that have been featured in magazines such as Teen Prom and Seventeen. Jasz Couture has made a name for itself with its attention to detail and fashion conscious designs. Get to know Tawinder Singh, CEO and president and Pam Nierenberg, creative consultant and designer of Jasz Couture.
Q: Where do you find inspiration for new designs?
A: We look at everything from sportswear and eveningwear to European magazines and celebrities. We watch for what’s hot in prints and beadwork or whether sequins or feathers are going to be strong.
Q:How do you want girls to feel when they are wearing a Jasz Couture dress?
A: We hope each and every girl feels special, liker her dress was designed for her. We never lose sight that prom is one of the most important nights in a girl’s life.
Q:What are some trends for Prom 2012?
A: Jasz Couture are still one of the hottest style. But because not every school allows dresses with cutouts, this year we’ve also done some beautiful, sexy closed dresses that have the Jasz look with our great beading.

Record Store Day
This Saturday, we dare you to unglue yourself from Pandora and Spotify, for an hour or so and visit a record store. Although some have predicted a financial apocalypse on local music retailers due to online piracy, we say, ‘forget about it.’ Remember what it felt like to wander aimlessly through the aisles of a record store, flipping through records and reading all the song titles, then marching over to a music player to preview the songs? There’s a certain kind of magic that only record stores can bring. Rekindle that love this weekend and pick up a record or two.
Our local suggestions:
1-Bleecker Street Records 239 Bleecker St

Eye-Opener: Kallie MacDonald
The ever-so stylish Kallie MacDonald is a Studio 54 girl at heart and we love her for it. Her inspiration list takes us back to Warhol-ian times and back. We can dig it.
Studio 54 - I am a 70's girl at heart and envy the glamour from that era.
Coachella- Every girl needs a little rock n roll in their wardrobe!
Fafi- my favorite artist.
Rhianna- I adore her but I love this Versace suit that she is wearing on the cover of Elle even more!

Eye-openers: Betty Dominguez
Today, it’s Betty Dominguez’s turn to tell us what moves and inspires her. We hope these picks get you thinking about what inspires you.
The 1950's- I am really inspired by the fashion sense of the 50's, and the alluring effect of Marilyn Monroe.
I try to incorporate these styles into my every day wear, and home decor. I love the cat shaped glasses, vintage Chanel bags and Bold Red lips. Which brings me to my inspiration.
Lipstick-I love Bright Bold colors!! All my other make up is minimal, a bright hue brightens my day, my mood and makes me feel awake! My favorite is a a Lavender Tint, I usually wear it around the office.
Modern Pop Art-I love Kaws, and Pop Art in general. My style is a mixture with pieces that are vintage twisted with modern day wear and art!. It describes my perosnality, a little reserve and classy, but living in a modern day fashion world.

NYC Metro Cuff
No self respecting New Yorker would ever admit to looking at a subway map. The truth is, we all peek at a map from time to time. Alas, there’s a stylish solution.
The folks at Design Hype have shrunk down that helpful subway map and given it a fashionable new makeover. Made of stainless steel, the NYC Metro Cuff has the city's subway lines and streets embossed along the curve of the wrist. So whenever the reception bars start to dwindle on your phone when you’re underground, you’ll have your nifty cuff. Cartier has nothing on this one. Quite frankly, we think it's better than weaving your head under or over a person’s armpit to get a closer look at a map on the train wall.

Our very own Debra Edwards, who looks stunning in red lipstick, gave us her list of inspirational things. Jem and the Holograms? Yes, please!
Yves Saint Laurent
I look at this picture and see creativity and innovation of the late Yves Saint Laurent. He pushed the envelope of what women were supposed to wear and made fashion that much more fun and interesting. Hello female tuxedo suit and giant bow dress! Setting trends in every way he was also the first designer responsible for putting ethnic models in his runway shows, which as a little girl in Jamaica inspired me to be anything I wanted to be. He is without a doubt a motivation to be a fearless fashion representative on a daily basis.
Jem Jam
Jem was my favorite cartoon as a child. She and The Holograms were unlike anything I had ever seen before. They had that certain je ne sais quoi, but moreover were proof that it was perfectly ok to experiment with fashion, mixing textures and colors to create your own signature style and make statement through magnificent eye-catching ensembles. Jem also inspired leadership qualities and girl power receptivity that has stuck with me to this day.
Dapper diner party
Yes I love to eat ;) That being said, however, a picture of this nature conjures up more than just food and rather evokes a bigger and much more meaningful experience that takes careful thought to execute, and brings friends and family together. The décor just like the clothes we wear is at the center of it all, the bold printed tablecloths are the canvases on which the whole experience is built around. Candles and goblets add a pop of color to the décor which is complemented by stunning floral decorations only to be perfected by the beautiful settings. Similarly with clothing I like to use certain statement pieces and build stunning outfits around them.

Eye-openers
Our very own Tiana Wright let us in on her eye-openers; things that inspire and move her. Take note, ladies.
Fashion Editorials: Softness
I love the fantasy factor of fashion editorials. There’s so much creativity making me want to jump right into the shot and be in the midst of it all. Its turn of the century style and the calmness of this photo inspires the more subtle side to my wardrobe. I look at this and just want to lie in a field of flowers, have a picnic, and simply be fabulous.
Bold:
This photo is a visual manual on looking great and being noticed. Bold Prints, bright colors, trendy silhouette, and terrific heels. It has everything I want at the moment from more prints in my closet to ombre hair. I’m obsessed with the peplums, and the high low skirt. This photo inspires me to take fashion risks and reminds me that bold can be way better!
Fashion Shows: Creative
I’m a creative person so I’m triggered by visuals. Fashion shows are styled so differently that it always makes me think about how I can interpret what I’ve seen on the runway to the sidewalk. The production of the shows are usually so grand, I feel like I’m in another world. The whole thing becomes such a fantasy I make it my mission to capture that feeling in my every day outfits.

Saturday Do: Dressed for Art
When we discovered that Jean-Phillipe Delhome’s “Dressed for Art,” was coming to a close this Saturday, we were a bit saddened, but it inspired this week's Saturday Do. If you haven’t already visited the FIAF Gallery to peep this collection of colorful fashion drawings and paintings, make a date to do so! Delhomme is regarded as one of the most delightful satirists in fashion. The multi-talented painter, writer, cultural blogger, and fashion illustrator, has been featured in renowned magazines such as Vogue, W, Vanity Fair, GQ, and The New Yorker. In this exhibition, he explores the relationship between fashion, contemporary art, and design and how they influence today’s pop culture.

Spring Inspiration Board
Our stylist Jonah designed this beauty inspiration board for our upcoming spring cover shoot this morning. Part of the fun about working alongside Jonah is his endless vision.
“I love the easy glamour and timeless sex appeal of these muses. The muses (Sharon Tate, Sophia Loren, Bridget Bardot, and Verna Lisi) embody an effortlessness in their beauty that I really love. They aren't trying to be sexy, it's innate. I mixed in modern fashion images that fit the aesthetic. I am imagining a Mad Hatter-esque pastel picnic, which is why I chose the teacups and silverware. I want the shoot to personify spring which is why I chose pastels, and added the outside element in the corner.”

Ottavio Missoni: Master of Color
Ottavio Missoni is synonymous with saturated color. To celebrate the him, the Italian Union organized an exhibition, “Ottavio Missoni: Master of Colors,” in Maribor, Slovenia.
The show depicts Missoni as an artist, businessman, and athlete. His original 1948 tracksuit is on display, on a mannequin covered in Missoni fabric. Pattern plans, fabric swatches, and artworks that carry his vibrant aesthetic are also included. There are actual Missoni pieces, too — bright baubles, scarves, and bags, along with vases encased in his flashy knits.
Faceless performers covered head to toe in Missoni.

Weekend Style: Over-the-knee Socks
One trend we’ve been spotting everywhere are over-the-knee socks. We’re not talking about sports inspired colorful socks; we’re referring to the socks that skim the thighs with feminine accents like lace patterns and prints. How to wear them: Pair with a mini skirt, scalloped shorts or dress. Keep the socks a solid color so as not to compete with your clothing’s pattern. Wear with your favorite pair of ankle booties, saddle shoes or wedges to complete your look. Balance out the short hemline of your dress, skirt or shorts with a loose fitting painter’s blouse. Here are some photos we snapped of ladies who sported the trend this weekend.

Diana: Glimpse of modern princess
Though Kate Middleton has been the apple of every magazine editor’s eye since joining the royal family, we thought it’d be fun to take a step back and explore Princess Diana’s fashion through a new exhibition at the Kensington Palace in London. The exhibition, “Diana: Glimpses of a modern princess,” was carefully curated for two years before opening to the public in late March. What can you expect? A little bit of fashion and a little bit of history. Twenty rooms have been refurnished with historical pieces and contemporary artwork. Visitors can walk around in rooms that have been covered with colorful wallpaper, designed by Julie Verhoeven, featuring Princess Diana in some of her signature looks. Get up close with beautiful gowns worn by Diana including pieces by Versace, David and Elizabeth Emanuel and Catherine Walker. Stay tuned for our photo diary of some of London’s most fashionable spots after our trip in May!

Raf Simons says hello to Dior
We thought all you fiery fashionistas might appreciate this bit of good news. Dior has finally found someone to replace John Galliano, after his firing last year. The fashion house’s artistic director position had been left unfilled for months, causing much speculation as to who would be chosen for the coveted position. It was announced yesterday that Raf Simons, formerly of Jill Sanders, was to fill Galliano’s shoes. We hear he was chosen because of his experience and because Dior wanted someone who was ‘low key.’ Simon’s first line is set to hit the haute couture runway shoe in July and Simons couldn’t be more delighted. Bravo, Simons, bravo!

Find of the day: Underwater Inks
We are such lovers that we find it hard to discriminate against any color. We'll wear white whenever we feel like it and red on “off seasons”. So when we heard that avocado green and pistachio were one of Spring’s “it” colors, we ran with it. A recent discovery made us want to drape ourselves in green from head to toe. This series of underwater inks titled, “A due Colori,” by Italian artist Alberto Sereso made us appreciate color even more, especially when it takes on a galactic inspired life of its own.

Saturday Do: ‘Youthquake’ at FIT
In big cities like New York, the weekends are absolutely priceless. They are, without a doubt, a time of recuperation, brunch hopping, errand running, shopping, cleaning and the careless schlepping around town. So it’s was a no brainer that we’d start a ‘Saturday Do’ series, letting you know what you should and could do in the city, if you are so inclined and have a spare half hour or so. Time is gold and we’ve picked things we want to check out ourselves to share with you. This week’s pick: ‘Youthquake’ exhibition at FIT. The exhibition celebrates 60s Mod and chronicles the impact of the youth culture during the 1960s, highlighting Twiggy and the hippie movement. This Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., is the last day to peep the fashion exhibit, curated by FIT students, so don’t miss out!

Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada
If you see one fashion exhibition this year, make sure it’s Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This stellar exhibition will be the focus of the upcoming Spring 2012 Costume Institute Exhibition taking place on May 7th. The actual exhibit will open to the public on May 10th and run through August 19th. The exhibition will explore the stark contrasts between both Italian designers from completely different eras.
The exhibition will feature 90 designs and 30 accessories by Schiaparelli who worked in Paris during the 1920s and by Miuccia Prada from the late 80s to present day. Schiaparelli’s most iconic pieces are the ‘Tear’ necklace, ‘Bug’ necklace and ‘Shoe’ hat, all of which were created during the Surrealist movement. Prada’s designs focus on fashion that is more reflective on Postmodernism. Her below-the-waist focus is symbolic of modernity and femininity. Either way, both women are fashion royalty and we agree that this exhibition merits a visit or two from every fashionista.

700 Spools of Thread: Keep it Together
In New York City, there’s a surprise in every corner. Yesterday during lunch, we discovered this performance art piece at Chashama, in the Garment District. The piece, by artist L. Mylott Manning, involves the transformation of the front window of the gallery space into a jungle of endless thread and fabric. The piece centers around a woman entwined in hundreds of tiny spools of thread. We highly recommend peeping this. The performance will run through April 8 at 7 p.m. An artist reception is happening today from 6-8 p.m.

Deana’s Prom Photo Shoot
We took a break from our New York studio and traveled to our prom model's hometown. The weather was absolutely gorgeous, as was our model, which made for a great shoot.
We did this shoot on the night of her prom, in between taking her from the hair salon back to her house. We were all so inspired by the beautiful green field that we couldn’t resist. We took to the lush open field for one of our most fun photo shoots ever. Deana chose

Ombre, ombre everywhere
In the late 90s, some of us here were in middle school and remember the punk inspired washed-out, multi-tonal blue, pink and purple hair look. Ombre was the last thing on any fashionista’s mind, to say the least. Circa 2012 and ombre is everywhere. When we started seeing teenage - middle-aged business women rocking variations of this trend, we were delighted.
Whether you rock the trend on your hair, nails, outfit or makeup, ombre is fashionably rebellious and we love it. So before you rule out being the cool kid in ombre, think again. Sherri Hill 7201
is sheer ombre heaven.
The soft lilac ombre on the lid is dramatic, yet subtle for a day-look. Don't be afraid to choose a color and ask your manicurist to give you an ombre look like this one.

Creative Cocktail
I remember watching a Diane Keaton in Manhattan as a child and hating everything she wore. I wasn’t a fan of Keaton’s long khaki skirt, embellished blouse and trademark blazer. And then something changed. I went to a cocktail event about a month ago and realized that Keaton might have had the right idea. While I was dressed in a plain black cocktail dress, everyone else had something else going on. I saw bits of burlap, knife pleats, sequins, nudes, earth tones, whites and loose fitting blazers. Keaton’s insouciant style was definitely present. Black tie, casual and business events are perfect for playing dress up and adding your own twist. I haven’t ruled out black dresses forever; they’ve just been spruced up. Well done, Keaton. For us, creative cocktail means whatever you want it to mean. It means being in your own lane and throwing caution to the wind. If you go with your instinct darling, you’ll never go wrong.
Here are my picks for dresses perfect for festive black tie events. Don’t be afraid to play around with your accessories as they’re the meat and bones of the look. Throw a blazer on, a lace shawl, a sequin bolero, gold clutch and slouchy sweater.
Issue NY EV1684
is a gem on its own and oh so perfect with a loose fitting cream blazer and a burlap or linen clutch. Dress it down with a taupe cropped slouch sweater, mesh ankle socks and a pair of vintage leather saddleshoes.
Niteline 441060 is also perfect on its own or with added accessories. Make it creative cocktail by adding a cream cardigan a geometric gold chain and suede grey pumps. Add a vintage inspired ring and a strand of pearls to complete the look.

Spring Time In the City
Bill Cunningham is, for me, the godfather of New York fashion. I ran into him at a hole in the wall diner in Midtown earlier this year and almost had a heart attack. I’d been eagerly following Cunningham’s candid photo essays for years and suddenly here we were; facing each other eating breakfast at the same time, in the same diner in New York. I didn’t blog about, didn’t tweet or update any kind of status. I simply kept the experience to myself and kept it as one of my New York jewels. What I love most about Cunningham is his age and the fact that in an industry full of twenty something year old bloggers, Cunningham manages to make it look effortless as he quietly glides by on his bicycle and snaps photographs of fashionable New Yorkers and anything that catches his fancy. His latest, “On the Street,” installment inspired me to literally stop and smell the flowers. Snapshots of blooming magnolias and fruit trees were peppered in with photographs of stylish women. So as fresh florals bloomed on the runways, I took to the various New York spots to snap some of my favorite and most fashionable Spring flowers.
