Prom 2011 Trend Alert: Oversized Floral Prints
Monday November 29, 2010 No comments yet

With this year’s prom floral prints, you’ll be anything but a wallflower.  They are bold and festive and bring a grand style with gorgeous color and delicate design.

A distinct pattern among the prom florals is large accent flowers at eye-catching points along the skirt and bodice.  It’s a very different look than the small rose prints and delicate garden prints we saw a lot of last spring and summer.  Smaller flowers tend to blend into a dress by adding a subtle texture, but larger flowers stand out and have a way of drawing eyes from clear across the room.  That kind of look-at-me drama is perfect for girls who really want to get noticed at prom.

Another asset of this style of floral print is dynamic color blending.  Using bold color contrasts in oversized floral shapes strikes the eye in a very pleasant way.  Blues and yellows and pinks and greens combine in a perfect complementary harmony and look very fashionable.

To look and feel your best in this year floral prints, consider your favorite flowers and which colors suit your skin tone.  This is going to be your best combination because you’ll never tire of looking at those gorgeous flowers and you’ll look equally amazing in the right colors, too.

We have a few favorites from this year’s collection, mostly for their uniqueness.  And we’re in love with this year’s many options.  Any girl can find a floral print that defines her style.  You can be soft, springy, and delicate, or festive, bright, and bold, and everything in between.  Check out our floral picks and tell us what you think:

Jovani Top Model Photo Shoot
Saturday November 27, 2010 2 Comments
What a fabulous day!  Several lovely contestants in the 2010 Jovani Top Model Search competition stopped by our office for their photo shoot on Friday, November 26, 2010.  Each one of the contestants had their makeup done by a professional makeup artist to get ready for the camera.

After they got the perfect look, they headed for the dress rack for their best color and fit match in one of our Jovani gowns.

Each girl took a turn in front of the camera showing off her best poses, smiles, and charm.

And even our very own Ryan took his turn posing and turning up the heat in front of the big lights.

We had so much fun meeting the contestants and getting them all dressed up to shine.  We want to thank everyone for their participation.  With so many beautiful girls and great photos, choosing just ten finalists for the second stage of the competition is going to be tough.  Best of luck to all!

Jovani is on the hunt for the next face of their brand, and they’ve chosen NewYorkDress.com to help with the Top Model Search in the New York City area.  The contest, called Jovani 2011 Top Model Search, is open to girls ages 15 – 19 in the United States, and the entry period is from November 8 – 24, 2010.  We will be helping Jovani select the New York state top model entrant, who will go on to compete to in the “Become the Next Face of Jovani” contest.

We will be holding open casting calls at our Manhattan office, where eligible contestants will come for a photo shoot with Jovani gowns.  Casting calls will take place between November 26 – 29, 2010 at our office headquarters.  Specific times for the casting calls have yet to be determined, and we will post that information as soon as it’s finalized. Contestants eligible for casting calls are selected by Jovani and the information is forwarded to us.

By December 15, 2010, we will choose ten finalists from the casting calls that take place at our office and submit those choices to Jovani.  The ten finalists’ pictures will be displayed on special Facebook pages for each retail location.  An open voting period follows this posting, and traffic from Facebook will be directed to the Jovani website to cast a formal vote for their favorite entrants.

NewYorkDress.com will hold a special event on January 8, 2011, with the top ten contestants from our casting calls.  Jovani representatives will be present to announce the winner.  Please see the official rules for more information on eligibility, prizes, and competition.

Prom 2011 Trend Alert: Pop Colors
Tuesday November 09, 2010 3 Comments

It’s a busy time at NewYorkDress.com .  We’re smack in the middle of adding all the prom 2011 dresses to our website and completely dizzied by sequins and sparkles.  We’re really excited, too, because this year’s gowns are stunning.  You’re gonna love ‘em.

Among the prom 2011 dresses, one of the biggest trends is a bright explosion of pop colors.  Pop colors scream fun, which really sets the tone for this year’s event.  It’s going to be a big, festive celebration punctuated by luscious floral prints, daring ombrés, and charming solids in a rainbow of bright pinks, aqua blues, mint and lime greens, and banana yellows.

If you rewind back to this year’s homecoming collections, you’ll recall that a subdued color palate and lots of black dominated the scene.  Prom, however, is going in a completely different, and more colorful, direction.  Part of that difference has to do with the season.  Prom is in the spring, so naturally the color palate leans toward pastels and springy colors.  This year, though, those lovely spring tints are stepping it up a notch in loud and lively pop colors.

So how do you accessorize these bright colors?  It depends on your personal style and the particular dress you choose.  But since your dress is going to be driving your look, it’s okay to let your accessories take a back seat.  Black or neutral peep toes are an excellent choice for shoes, and they’ll look fabulous paired with a clutch or wristlet in the same color.  Adding a little gemstone sparkle lets you cast a colorful pop shimmer, so diamonds, colored gems, and rhinestones are a fabulous way to glam up your accessories, too.  Just make sure you don’t overdo it on the sparkle—you don’t want to blind anyone.

You might want to try something daring with your hair to match that fun, colorful mood.  A half updo with loose curls and lots of volume makes a bold statement, as does flowing tresses or a French twist with a sassy pompadour.  Have fun with it and you’ll stay on trend for prom 2011.
