Make More Excuses
Tuesday September 28, 2010 No comments yet
Is it just us or has life gotten a little too casual?  Between ultra-plush active wear and designer denim, we're finding ourselves dressing down, in style, more than ever before. Only when it's a special event do we take the time to get buttoned, zipped, and teased up in that glamorous way that makes us feel, well, sexy. We miss that.

So we've decided to buckle down and start making more excuses. That's right. We're gonna dig deep and look for any reason to get dolled up and have fun the chic way.  Here's our top five excuses and dresses to go all out fabulous.

Tell us your excuses!

Tamara Pogosian Spring 2011
Sunday September 19, 2010 1 Comment
Edgy urban frocks mix and mingle with straightforward glamorous gowns in Tamara Pogosian’s spring 2011 collection.  Heavy on the sparkle and shine, her day and eveningwear dresses celebrate femininity that’s streetwise, opulent, and sexy.

We had the opportunity to view her upcoming collection at a party last week at the Stone Rose lounge here in NYC.  The atmosphere was swanky, hip, and friendly, and the upscale club environment complemented the style and mood of the collection impeccably well.  DJ Stacey Stylez kept the crowd mingling and grooving with low-key dance music and singer Meah Pace kicked of the runway show with a chill rendition of “Piece of My Heart.”

The spring line shows off the designer’s dexterity and unmistakable love of dresses.  Some of our favorites included a glittery club dress with draped short sleeves and a cutout back and a stunning silver satin gown with a petite cape drape over the back shoulders.  A dramatic mood sets these dresses apart for party nights and special occasions when you want to bring the stylish shine of confidence and allure.

Check out our runway photos and tell us what you think of this collection!

Tibi Spring 2011

Bright lights, fluttery frocks, and a laid-back vibe.  Amy Smilovic, Tibi designer, says, “spring is about beauty and classics with a thoroughly modern twist and styles that are simple with ease.”  The Tibi spring 2011 show was pure delight with an unmistakably poppy-chic vibe.  Feminine silhouettes bounced down the runway in swingy circle skirts, short rompers, flowing maxi dresses, and graceful tunics.

Solids dominated the collection in delicate whites and off-whites, bold gold and yellow, classic black, and not-to-be-missed purple.  Basketweave wedges stood out among the footwear complimenting the carefree, ready-wear feel of the pantsuits and dresses.  A little bit of cashmere added a touch of grace, while herringbone linen brought it all together with structured jackets, pants, and shells.  And leather trim was a fashion-forward detail worthy of admiration.  Oh Tibi, we can’t wait till spring!

Intermission: NYC Fashion Week 2010
Sunday September 12, 2010 No comments yet
It’s the middle of Fashion Week here in New York City.  The streets are buzzing with fashion news, and everyone in the industry is decked out in their hottest Fall 2010 duds to check out the runway shows for the Spring 2011 season.

Fashion Week rolls around twice a year in NYC, and it’s actually longer than a week.  But that misnomer is fine by us because, well, it’s kind of fashion’s job to challenge conventions.  And besides, stretching out a good, stylish event is something we can definitely get behind.  Maybe this could be a new homecoming or prom trend?  If homecoming was suddenly three nights instead of just one, you could wear every dress you’ve got your eye on this year.  Hmmm, let’s start a movement.  Who’s with us?

At New York Dress, we’re kicking it into overdrive to see how many stylish events we can pack into these last four days.  We’ll be stopping by runways and mixers all over the city searching for new dresses and labels to add to our collection.  Stay tuned to our blog for this year’s highlights or send us a shoutout via Facebook or Twitter.  You can follow all the breaking news, catch up on the gossip, and join the conversation at the #NYFW hashtag on Twitter, too.

Emmys 2010 Style Spotlight: Kim Kardashian
Thursday September 09, 2010 No comments yet
It’s been over a week, which is like a millennia in fashion time, and Kim Kardashian’s Emmys look is still enchanting.  All of that gorgeous draping in a beautiful summer white made her stand out in perfect seasonal style with timeless glamour.  And being the style maven that she is, her hair and accessories were also on point, easily making her one of the best dressed of the evening.  Even if you can’t afford a custom Marchesa gown and top-of-line jewels like Kim, there are still some style points from her look you can take and make your own.

The first focus of this stunning red carpet ensemble is the gown.  White chiffon is an excellent combination of elegance and romance that has look-at-me drama and breezy grace.  The ornamental neckline shimmers with gold and silver details in perfect contrast to the rest of the gown. Draping gives the bodice presence, and the slender waistline shows off a curvy silhouette beautifully.

Her hairstyle, a woven and braided updo, is a perfect complement to the dress.  The gown is free flowing but also structured and dramatic, so put-together hair is in order.  Having the hair up also draws attention to the amazing neckline and flowing back drape.

Simple diamond earrings work well, too, because they don't overwhelm.  The shimmer and shine is eye-catching without competing with the neckline or her glowing face.  Instead, Kim saves her power accessory for her wrist with an oversized cuff bracelet that weaves up her forearm in full pave sparkle.

So if you’re interested in pulling off Kim’s Emmys look, start with a flowing gown in white.  Hit the salon for a dramatic updo, limit yourself to one power accessory, and smile—you look like a goddess!

How to Wear Fall Colors
Tuesday September 07, 2010 No comments yet
Fall is afoot. Time to pack up those wispy chiffon slip dresses and sandals (sigh) and switch to knee-high boots, pencil skirts, and cashmere sweaters. The autumn weather brings necessary wardrobe changes and a dramatic shift in color palate that requires you to abandon summery blues, pinks, and greens and opt for autumnal hues instead. Don't worry, though, this isn't a bad thing.  The fall color palate is distinct and dramatic in its own right with luscious earthy browns, greens, purples, and reds.

It's the transition that can be a little bit difficult. How do you know which fall colors are for you and which ones you should leave out of your wardrobe?  This cool video gives you a crash course in wearing fall colors, so you can make the seasonal transition in style.

Sherri Hill Reigns at Miss America & Miss Universe
Thursday September 02, 2010 1 Comment

2010 has been a remarkable year for Sherri Hill.  Always a favorite, Sherri Hill gowns and cocktail dresses make a routine appearance at beauty pageants all across the world.  Elegant, feminine, and stylish, too, the dresses exude grace with youthful charm that’s befitting of any beauty queen.  And even though the label is no stranger to the beauty spotlight, it’s still a big accomplishment when both Miss America and Miss Universe are crowned in Sherri Hill.

On January 30th, 2010 Miss Virginia, Caressa Cameron was crowned Miss America.  She wore a dazzling Sherri Hill evening gown in yellow satin with a rhinestone bodice and flashy one-shoulder neckline.  Simple and refined, the gown complemented the young contestant’s carefree style, and the boisterous yellow hue matched her glowing personality.

Fast forward to August 23, 2010 at the Mandalay Bay resort in Las Vegas.  After days of competition, Jimena Navarette, Miss Mexico was crowned Miss Universe 2010.  She chose a stunning red evening gown by Sherri Hill, artful in its elegant design.  Delicate pleating at the bodice, an embellished one-shoulder neckline, and a graceful flowing overskirt captivated the world’s attention from the pageant stage.  Shimmering ruby embellishments added to her enchanting charm.

In addition to the crowned winner, all of the top 15 contestants wore the same Sherri Hill cocktail dress during the competition.  This fun party frock is a trendsetter with chic bandage layers and flashy rhinestone embellishments.  It flatters several different body types and can be worn in a variety of styles.  Maybe it’s this versatility that keeps the label in the pageant limelight?  We’re not really sure, but one thing we do know is we can expect the same quality, fashion-savvy, and refinement from Sherri Hill that will always be a leading contingent.
