Get Sentimental!

Sentimental is a bold brand we're featuring this season. Their dresses are a fabulous mix of sweet and sexy, with a heavy focus on lace—think delicate meets ooh la la. Lace evokes that feminine feel we all want for a special occasion and is a smart pick for fall or spring formal events. Sentimental's lace dresses are also great if you're the birthday girl who wants to celebrate her special day in look that's classic and refined. (view: Senitmental 866)

What we love about lace is that it can be modern or stay traditional. It's all in how you wear it! You don't want to go overboard since you want the lace to be the focal point of your look. But that doesn't mean you don't get to play with accessories, hair and makeup. It's about the entire look, so before you start picking out what to wear with your Sentimental dress, choose if you want to go mega trendy with the look or keep it chic and classic. Today we're focused on modern and trendy, but stay tuned for tips on how to make the same dress fit for a posh occasion.

Modern & Trendy Style Tips for a Lace Dress (view: Sentimental: 8840)

- Add chain accessories such as a chain necklace or shoes with chain detail. The hardware should coordinate with the color of your dress. If your dress is off-white, gold or antiqued brass, hardware works best. If the dress is black, go for silver or gunmetal.

- Add ankle booties to give the look an edgy appeal. Platform ankle booties work best if you'll be on the dance floor. Shoes with an architectural slant also create a trendy look when worn with a lace dress.

- Rock undone hair. A messy low bun or loose waves make a lace dress modern and cool. You don't want the hair to be too done if you're going for a trendy look. A fishtail braid also looks great for a hip hairstyle that keeps your pulled back.

- Go for a bold lip. How about a bright orange or neon pink? Finishing touches like this will make your lacy look stand out. (view: Sentimental 860)

Picking the Perfect Formal Dress

There's so many things to consider when picking out a formal dress—where you're going, the mood of the party, and the style you want to create. And let's not forget budget, either, because that usually plays a big role, too. We've put all these things together and picked out a versatile formal dress that you can wear again and again and exude that classy, worldly presence you're known for.

First up, the label. We picked a dress from Jovani 14528 , sartorial masters known for luxe looks. We're talking fabulous dresses that stand out and make you feel like a million bucks. Their short dresses and minis are amazing, but the brand does gowns like no one else. There are many to choose from, but for those who love something classic yet exciting, this illusion bodice gown with draped taffeta Ball Skirt fits the bill.

Finally, the finished look. Stick with the regal tone of this Jovani gown by wearing your hair in an updo. If you're going the DIY route, a slicked-back bun is the best way to go. Sport smoky eye makeup implementing a slate or silver shadow and go soft on the lips with a peach or pale pink. In terms of accessories, you can sport chandelier earrings like the model (especially when rocking an updo) or opt for a simple pair of studs and an opulent cuff like this bracelet from Sophie 334 .

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

In the pink parade: Making Strides walk draws thousands for breast cancer awareness and among them is NewYorkDress.com.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the American Cancer Society's premier event to raise awareness and dollars to fight breast cancer. More than just the name of a walk, it describes the amazing progress we're making together to defeat this disease. This was our opportunity to join our community to celebrate breast cancer survivors, educate women about early detection and prevention, and raise money to fund lifesaving research and to support programs to help us reach a day when no one will have to hear the words "You have breast cancer". This day brought together people from all walks of life and reminded us how great it feels to be a part of something positive. NewYorkDress.com was not just a part of a walk or celebration, NewyorkDress.com was part of a movement.

NewYorkDress.com's inventory manager (Queen of laughter), Brenda walked with her children. Ordering supervisor (Sassy Stylist), Karen walked with her family, proudly sporting matching pink t-shirts. And, our accountant (the fashionista), Afra walked in her pink wig!.

Among the supporters was the Italian luxury fashion house of Fendi

Survivors celebrating life and children dancing for the cause.

Even the dogs dressed up in support. Check out her pink eye lashes!

White After Labor Day
Wednesday October 19, 2011 1 Comment

Color: Part 2
What's the deal with no white after Labor Day?

For centuries wearing white in the summer was simply a way to stay cool, — like changing a dinner menu or drinking white wine -- but today we have air conditioners and halter tops to beat the heat. We also have heaters and cabs to move us through the cold. With all that we can do, can't we wear any color while doing it?

We've also heard that the origin of the no-white-after–Labor Day is symbolic. Many believe that in the early 20th century, white was a pleasing contrast to drabber urban life- think white linen suits, Panama hats, summer vacations and the "look of leisure." Perhaps once back in the city, many of the fashion elite simply felt they needed a new wardrobe and color scheme? This could be true, but honestly, why are we still following it? Check out how good these celebrity fashion icons look in white, after Labor Day.

Whatever the reason is that this rule started, it is time to retire it. Let's pay homage to the rebel Coco Chanel who in 1920 brought out the white, year-round staple. Fashion rules are meant to be broken by those who can pull it off and we know that you can! Send us pictures of you in white after Labor Day or post them on Facebook

What Dress Color Says About You

What Dress Color Says About You

In a dress, color is everything. We love dramatic embellishments, daring silhouettes, and luscious fabrics as much as the next woman. But color is the first thing we notice, and it's the decisive factor when adding a dress to our wardrobe.

We've broken dress color down to it's essence to tell you what each hue says about you. Our first focus is on the basics: black, white and red. Study up and you'll know exactly what message you're sending when wearing a LBD, LWD or LRD.

Black

There's a reason your on every guest list—elegance is always in. You're creating an air of mystery and reveling in power and prestige. And another bonus, you're looking thinner, too. Terani 6352J

White

Put on your halo because you're bringing purity and goodness everywhere you go. You're light and airy, creating a positive mood. The perfect color for your perfect self. Jovani Mother of the Bride 159230

Red

You've brought passion and everyone knows it. A perfect blend of sensuality and danger, you'll draw a crowd and raise more than a few pulses. Tonight, desire is your middle name. Faviana 6428

Find Your Edge with Jasz Couture

Find your Edge with Jasz Couture

Jazzy Couture dresses offer formal wear with an edge. It isn't about basic shapes or styles, we're talking fashion-forward dresses that stand out in a crowd. When we think of Jazzy Couture, the style of stars like Rihanna and Fergie come to mind. Don't worry, if you go by more than just one name, you can rock Jasz Couture 4403 too. It's all about confidence with Jazzy Couture formal wear. If you love to play with texture and embellishment, Jazzy Couture is definitely a label to explore when selecting a dress for your next special event.

The little black dress (LBD)
doesn't have to be the same ol' thing. An LBD is always a winner for special occasions. Sometimes you aren't sure what color to wear or what others will be wearing when you attend an event, so an LBD is a go-to that will make you feel chic. This Jazzy Couture LBD has a bustier-style bodice with a sweetheart neckline and major embellishments. We're talking beadwork, jeweled stones and even frilly detailing at the bust. The textured skirt has a bit of volume with a plush, feathery look. This is a statement dress for sure, but sometimes more is more, especially if you're known in your crowd as a fashion lover. When it comes to accessories, go all out. Think about the style of Nikki Minaj (when she's more tame). Try fingerless lace gloves and black ankle boots instead of the conventional strappy sandals. For hair, what about a tight ponytail? Winged eye liner or a smoky eye using color, such as teal or purple would also add to the party vibe of this edgy dress.

Benjamin Walk's 'Starlite' 4403 pumps, paired with Jasz Couture's dress, is a match made is heaven!

Vava Voom!

We always expect curvy things from Mandalay, but the latest Julian Joyce dresses have us caught between ooh la la and va va voom! Looks like we're not the only ones excited about these dresses, as usual, Kim Kardashian's already hip to this label and it's curve-enhancing power.

But we have other fashion-appetites too, and Julian Joyce by Mandalay more than delivers. Staying true to their classic, feminine shapes, the label also offers the right touch of exotic to glam up a classic look. Take a look at the swishy hemline, a chic way to add a touch of movement to a curve-hugging piece. And the way those crystals drape so delicately down the neckline? Simply gorgeous. In neutral or classic black, you'll also be on-trend in all seasons.

Special thanks to our amazing model Nashly. This shoot was amazing not only due to the beautiful product, but also because we were able to work with such a talented and wonderful spirited model. See more of our photos newyorkdress.tumblr.com

Dress and Tell Winner, Sept. 2011

Check out New York Dress's September winner for "Dress and Tell"! Shelby wore style 81306H , in white, by Mac Duggal. She wore the gown to compete in the American Coed Pageant as well as National American Miss pageant over this past summer. Shelby received numerous compliments on it and won Best Dress at the State Pageant! Since the bodice was jeweled, she didn't want to take away from it so she paired it up with simple diamond earrings. She wore satin 4" heels that matched the material at the bottom of the gown. She chose this dress because it was simple, yet elegant. The dress really sparkled on stage.

Be sure to upload a photo of you in your NewYorkDress.com dress and be entered to win $200 off your next purchase!

Go Cute as a Cupcake for Homecoming

We're still living the homecoming dream, and our latest moonlight obsession is Mori Lee. With cute-as-a-cupcake minis and sexy body con cocktail dresses, we want to kick up our heels and show off our dance moves. Two big embellishments that make our hotlist in this collection: 1. ombre ruching done bandage style and 2. contrast wire-hemming. And with that bright color palate, bring on the colorful eyeshadow and glitter.

Did you wear Mori Lee to your homecoming? Show off your pictures on our Facebook wall or enter our Dress & Tell contest. We can't wait to see how you accesorized!

Fergie Goes Glided

Fergie's one of our many fashion obsessions. We've written about her before, and the truth is, she never fails to catch our eye. This past weekend she took the stage in Central Park for the Concert 4 NYC, wearing this structured masterpiece.

What can we say, other than we love it. So bold, so fierce, and so Fergie. This is the dress every modern woman is wearing on the inside—tough, sexy, and gilded in shiny gold. If you're looking to discover your edge a la Fergie, check out our club dresses and go all in for something unexpected.

This dress also reminds us that Halloween is just around the corner. As usual, we're still considering our best looks: a super-sexy Cat Woman, a city-chic Jane of the Jungle, or your everyday princess. We'll keep you posted...and definitely tell us what you're wearing.
