On The Move
What happens when two major players of the New York fashion industry decide to take a long needed sabbatical? A natural onslaught of questions and a sense of rebellion and freedom to do whatever they please. These two major players are none other than former editor in chief of Lucky magazine, Kim France and fashion director of Barneys, Amanda Brooks.
Amanda Brooks
Brooks announced her decision to leave Barneys back in March and stated she’d be moving to England where she’ll live in the countryside. The reason behind her decision? Brooks said she began reading Ree Drummond’s blog, The Pioneer Woman. Drummond is a mother of four who lived on a cattle ranch outside of Oklahoma. Brooks, said she dropped weight during her traveling and couldn’t stand the long days. Brooks is jumping behind a computer desk and returned to her previous blog, ILoveYourStyle,
and will write a second book reflecting on her 20 years in the fashion industry.
Kim France
As for Kim France, who left her coveted position at Lucky Magazine in 2010, her new life is headache free and oh so good. The 48 year old has also taken to a blog she began in Christmas of last year,
“Girls of a Certain Age,” which is geared towards other forty something year old women who have a bit of a rebellious edge in them. France, who still lives in New York said that she’s never been happier returning to writing. While the decision for both of these women with high profile jobs certainly created a backlash and a buzz, it seems as if they’ve found happiness on their own terms.

Malgosia Bela Dances for i-D's Summer Issue
i-D’s Summer Issue struck an orchestral chord in our hearts. The Lights, Camera, Action issue features a dramatic and beautifully photographed editorial of Polish model Malgosia Bela as a dancer. Photographer Greg Kadel captures the model in action as she melts into sudden rapturous movements, wearing select pieces from Louis Vuitton, Alexander McQueen and Balenciaga. This video secretly made us want to run away and become ballerinas and while that probably won’t happen anytime soon, it was a beautifully composed minute that elevated us to a kind of zen place. Violinist Daniel Bensi lends his musical talent, which perfectly highlights Malgosia’s captivating turn as a prima ballerina.

Commes des Garcons Honored
Those who caught even a peek of Commes des Garcons’ Fall 2012 runway show in Paris, might have felt like a fly on the wall in Alice’s Wonderland. The colorful flat felt dresses were enough to confuse and excite people all at once. The creative genius behind this Japanese line is Rei Kawakubo and her husband Adrian Joffe.
On Monday, the petite Kawakubo will be honored with a lifetime achievement award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Kawakubo, who's always pushing the envelope, said in an interview with the New York Times, that she 'prefers for the concept to not be too clear or easily understood.' In true fashion, the elusive designer, who stopped appearing in her own runway shows years ago, will not be present to receive her own award.

But you can’t give your heart to a wild thing: the more you do the stronger they get. Until they’re strong enough to run into the woods. Or fly into a tree. Then a taller tree. Then the sky. That’s how you’ll end up, Mr. Bell. If you let yourself love a wild thing. You’ll end up looking at the sky.

The Coiffure Project
Baltimore based photographer Glenford Nunez was documenting a hair revolution and he didn’t even realize it. The 25 year old began snapping photographs of his curly haired assistant and noticed how much her hair brought the photograph to life. Soon after, Nunez began shooting a series of other women who let their hair flow au naturale and thus
‘The Coiffure Project’ came to life.
The Coiffure Project, which celebrates the beauty of black women and their natural hair, follows in the footsteps of female celebrities, such as Viola Davis, Erykah Badu and Solange Knowles who wear their hair naturally. While Knowles has already compiled an impressive collection of photographs, both in black and white and in color, he is still on the lookout for women with big hair. Nunez says he plans on using all the photographs for a coffee table book.

Tag: Crochet Art in Brooklyn
Just when you thought you'd seen it all, New York throws you another surprise to make the city feel all new again. This weekend, it came in the form of a performance art by the Polish artist Agata Oleksiak. We found her on a busy sidewalk in Brooklyn. Vibrant knitwear in humid weather? Who are we to argue with art? We were absolutely enchanted as was the boy who stood in amazement until his parents had to dash him away. Thank you for that tidbit of eye candy and inspiration Olek.

Saturday Do: Cover your Wall in Photographs
This Saturday Do calls us to visual stimulation and its wonders. While framed photos are great treasures, we're loving the idea of a wall covered entirely in photographs. If you'd prefer, make a shape using photographs of your choosing on your wall. Aside from being aesthetically pleasing, photographic wall art can be a great way to remember loved ones and favorite past events all at once.

Short and Sweet
Oh the thrill of a great frill! We are head over heels in love with shorts that are sweeter than cake and light as a daisy. Two new trends being donned by Hollywood belles and women either side of the pond are scalloped and lace shorts. Sure we love our tried and true denim cut offs and printed shorts, but there's something about the feminine accents in these two styles that make us feel so elegant. And if a pair of shorts can keep the heat at bay and makes us feel oh so pretty, we're definitely on board. For a quick and chic summer look, pair your lace/scalloped shorts with a loose denim button up or boyfriend v-neck, saddle shoes or ballerina slippers and layered bracelets.Sometimes, the sweetest things in life are indeed, the shortest.

Artists & Fleas Pop Up Shop at Chelsea Market
One of our last minute discoveries in the city was the Artists & Fleas pop up shop at Chelsea Market. Tucked quietly underneath the High Line, it boasts a handful of vendors, artists, vintage dealers and designers. We can honestly say that it was a nice break away from the city's sometimes overwhelming retail shopping experience. The original Artists & Fleas is located in Williamsburg, but something about this pop up shop makes the experience feel new and exciting. If you haven't paid a visit to the pop up shop yet, you have until June 3rd to do so. The shop is open 7 days a week from 10:30 am to 7 pm.

Francoise Hardy Street Style
Long before the days of street style photographers like Bill Cunningham and The Sartorialist, (Scott Schuman), were style icons who were always street style stars and just a little under the radar. Enter French musician and style icon Francoise Hardy. The slender powerhouse had a quiet charm about her, often times avoiding the limelight as best possible. Hardy was also an actress and starred in films such as Jean-Luc Godard's "Masculin, Feminin" and " What's New Pussycat." Hardy, who often sported straight hair with blunt bangs and cat eyeliner, was also known for her chiseled cheekbones and pencil thin frame. Hardy had a penchant for thrift shopping and also wore clothing designed by Andre Courréges and Paco Rabanne. In short, Francoise Hardy's style was pure tomboy chic and is what most modern-day editorial spreads are made of. We look back at some of Hardy's best looks fit for any street style photographer's lens.

|
Make it Work: Overalls
Sometimes, fashion can make us a tad bit nervous. That's perfectly fine. It challenges us to think outside our closet. What looks do you love that you're too afraid to try? This question lead us to our own fashion quandary: overalls. As children, the majority of us wore them to the bone. The cool kids always wore their overalls with one strap hanging in the back. Fast forward a decade or two and they've made their way back into the limelight. These sneaky farmers' staple aren't readily stocked in most stores, but we think it's worth grabbing a pair or full overalls or shorts next time they're spotted. Worn properly, overalls can actually be quite charming. Do: Cuff the bottoms of full length overalls and pair with a heels and plain boyfriend v-neck shirt and blazer. Don't: Pair your overalls with boots or belts. No, no, no! Balance out the loose overalls with feminine accents.

Little Black Jacket
Black is classic, sleek and oh so timeles. The little black jacket is no exception. Chanel, which is putting the spotlight on its iconic jacket as part of a traveling exhibition, has chosen a downtown location for the New York leg of “The Little Black Jacket” tour. This phenomenal collection of photographs, by Karl Lagerfeld, is set to run from June 8 to 15 at 18 Wooster Street. Lagerfeld took 113 photographs of pop icons wearing the iconic garment, including model Joan Smalls to Yoko Ono and Sarah Jessica Parker, to name a few.
In addition to the exhibit, Chanel is also planning window displays at its New York boutiques of jackets from its Paris-Bombay métiers d’art collection. A Steidl tome of the photos, styled by Carine Roitfeld, is due out in the fall.

Obsessed with…Chalk Dyed Hair
After weeks of seeing this trend on every magazine, blog, street corner and tweet, we came to the realization we were thoroughly (and healthily) obsessed with chalk dyed hair. Don’t want to take on the tedious task of a costly salon visit or commit to the trend for weeks? No problemo babe. There was a way and we found it and now we are sharing our delightful find with you. The good news? You’ll go back to your days in high school art class with the method and you can fearlessly wear a white blouse with your newly colored hair. It won’t smudge, so go on and shake that hair as much as you want.
You'll need:
Chalk Pastels
1) Pick your favorite chalk color and wet the tip of the chalk you have chosen. Rub the end of the chalk up and down the tips of your hair, re-wetting when necessary. (You can also wet your hair instead of the chalk, but I find it easier to just re-wet the chalk when needed. You don't want your waterlog your hair, since then it will become a mushy mess.
2) Experiment. This type of hair is meant to be fun and carefree!
3) Wait for your newly colored hair to dry a little before you get dressed. You don't want to get colored dye on your party outfit. After you've had your fun, simply wash your hair with shampoo and voila!

Lady Gaga’s Monster Ponytail
Lady Gaga's been known for her outlandish fashion sense, i.e, the raw meat dress, silicone cone shaped bras, Kermit the Frog ensemble and now, a lopsided sky high ponytail with seemingly gravity defying properties. Fans in the Philippines were greeted by Gaga's monster platinum blonde ponytail and reactions, to say the least, were mixed. The larger than life ponytail was knotted at the top and flopped over the side of her head. While she kept the rest of her look rather simple, it appears as if Gaga's ponytail needed an entourage all on its own. Was her look a pony do or pony don't?

Punchy florals are having their moment and we couldn't be happier about it. This season's collections have taken a cue from Mother Nature herself. Fresh orchid, rose, carnation and geranium prints, oh my! Celebs have been flocking to this soft and feminine trend, outfitting themselves in floral print skirts, dresses, pants, blouses and accessories. A little dash of whimsy in our wardrobes; why not?

When Fashion and Music Collide
What happens when you pair a rising musician with a must have accessory? You get a music/fashion collaboration that just works for everyone. Take ‘The Alexa Bag,’ for instance. It’s still being toted around by fashionistas everywhere even after two years after its release. The British label hopes to repeat its initial success with music’s dreamy muse, Lana del Rey. The Del Rey Bag, a sleek and polished carryall that takes into accountability the singer’s old-Hollywood sensibility, made its debut at Mulberry’s show during London Fashion Week in February and arrives in stores this month. Something tells us this fashion collaboration will be an absolute hit.
This month Rachel Roy adds to her roster of cocreators with a capsule collection with Brazilian singer Seu Jorge, for her lower-priced line, Rachel Rachel Roy. Roy's collection pops with Latin flavor: multicolored straw totes; bold, beach-ready sundresses; and glamorous gladiator sandals. We can't wait for this line!

Quote of the Day
“We do not grow absolutely, chronologically. We grow sometimes in one dimension, and not in another; unevenly. We grow partially. We are relative. We are mature in one realm, childish in another. The past, present, and future mingle and pull us backward, forward, or fix us in the present. We are made up of layers, cells, constellations.”

Perfect Summer Bride Looks
Undone Bun and Glam Eyes:
Work texture into your hair like Amber Heard by twisting it around a curling iron and then pulling it back into a tousled, wispy bun. Pair with smoky eyes done in copper shadows and a peach lip for a look that works at an afternoon or evening ceremony.
Center Part Sweep and Rosy Lips
This look is so simple, yet stunningly gorgeous. Slick your hair half-back (trick: pat on serum for extra shine before flat-ironing) and swiping on a petal pink lipstick that’s just bright enough to draw attention without being too flashy.
Sleek Top Knot and Glamorous Lashes
We're loving Kate Hudson's look here. To get her look: gather hair into a high ponytail and wrap the length around the base, minimizing any frizz with a shot of hairspray. For big, fluttery lashes that last all night, apply a lash primer to build volume before coating on super dark mascara.
Cascading Long Waves and Silvery Eyes
If you want to wear your hair loose, take a cue from Freida Pinto and opt for a soft and feminine look. To get her look: mist on shine spray before blowing hair out with a large round brush, twisting back a section above your ear and pinning in place at the nape. Choose a mercury eye shadow with a hint of sparkle to catch the light. Apply a sheer pink lipstick to compliment your look.

Skittle Nails
Beauty: Skittle Nails
Nail the perfect look this Spring with Skittle nails. We love this trend because of its nostalgic undertone. If you’re not quite feeling the ombre trend, jump on the color train and paint each nail a different color or the combination of 2-3 colors making a pretty pattern.
We love how fun this looks — especially if you’re wearing dark colours, having the nail polish popping and being the center of attention. It’s fun and summery. This summer Essie has come out with a great colour palette that we think is great to try this with. There’s just something about perfectly manicured nails; you just want to wave at everyone and wiggle your fingers all the time.
The collection consists of 6 shades: Navigate Her (pale green), A Crewed Interest (peach), Olé Caliente (Scarlet), Orange, it’s obvious! (Orange), To Buy or Not to Buy (Lilac) and Tour de Finance (Fushcia).

|
|
Go For Gold
It's almost time to put away that heavy eyeliner and bring out the lighter, brighter shadows that scream summer. With festivals, concerts, vacations or lazy sun bathing just around the corner, we thought it'd be best for you to go for gold.
First, take a peachy bronze shimmer shadow and apply to lid with a soft wide bristled brush. Then use a taupe shadow to lightly define crease (matte shadows work best). Finish with a gold shimmer shadow, either powder or cream, applied to the inside corner of the eye.
And as always curl lashes and apply mascara as desired. For this look, I like just a touch of black concentrated at the base of the lashes. That way the mascara doesn’t interfere with the ethereal lid.

Lindsey Wixson, Kasia Struss, Fei Fei Sun, Ginta Lapina and Daphne Groeneveld jump out of retro book covers, get tangled in highways and their fierce shoes go autonomous and pose in front of traffic lights. Statement Piece of the Moment: Opal Jewelry
Look radiant in opulent opal jewelry this summer. We’ve been spotting hazy opals on the streets and on celebrities. Our consensus: You can never go wrong with an opal piece of jewelry, as it can be dressed up or dressed down.
Trippy translucent opals give a luminescent pop and glow to the wearer and looks amazing on all skin tone, (Busy Phillips rocked eerie earrings to the Oscars).
The kaleidoscopic and cool stone looks extraterrestrial, but did you know that the majority of opals actually hail from Australia? They’ve also been known to provide good luck and supernatural powers to the wearer. One thing we are sure of, are their magnitude on and off the red carpet. Opals may not come cheap, but it’s looking like they’re what’s dropping next. Check out these pieces that have a bit of hologram chic to them.

Rihanna’s Second Capsule Collection for Armani
You may remember Rihanna’s first capsule collection for Armani Jeans and Emporio Armani underwear. Her collection was an absolute success, which may be why she’s heading a second collection.
The denim range will include a pair of jean shorts lined with a tartan print (to show off when you roll them up super short), a romper in distressed denim that looks adorable, (judging by the sketch alone), and some easy tanks and tees. The underwear is comfy and made of stretch cotton and includes a tanks and shorts set and some push-up bras with glitter.
Rihanna recently said that she’d like to design on her own line and she’s also set to star in a new fashion reality TV show in the UK. We agree that Rihanna is definitely heading in the right direction.

Soft and Sweet Side Braid

Seasons come and go, hair is cut and hair is grown. No matter what color or texture your hair is, one look we always love coming back to is the side braid. Popular for its simplicity and femininity ,the side braid can take you from morning to night. If you're starting from scratch, the key is to get the right texture before you start braiding. If you have fine or medium textured hair, use a texture spray to add body, not frizz. Make sure to keep a loose part; your braid should look a bit unkempt in a side-swept motion. If you want more body in your braid, curl your hair first, as this will add some bulk to your braid. Afterwards, rough it up a bit and add a dime size of grooming cream.
Your hair should already be swept to one side, so merely braid it as you see fit and secure it with a clear elastic hair tie. And there you have it: a fuss-free hairstyle, inspired by the runways and red carpet, that's as easy as can be.

Lauren’s Eye-Openers
Today’s eye-opener segment comes to us from our bridesmaid specialist, Lauren. A little fresh foreign air, glamour and animal print makes Kilbane one happy woman. We’re on board with that!
Glamorous women inspire me: Liz Taylor, Mae West and Jackie O are just 3 women who come to mind. Be it tons of jewels and bling , fur (faux of course) or simply a pair of big sunglasses whenever I put on any of these pieces I instantly feel glamorous!
I love to travel one of my favorite places I have been to has been the Amalfi Coast in Italy. I’m a beach girl at heart, so give me the beach and a breathtaking view that almost seems unreal and I’m in heaven. Any time I think about my trip I always makes me want to get out and see the rest of the world.
I’m a sucker for a Leopard print! Dresses, shoes, scarfs bags and anything I can get my hands on. It’s my go to print whenever I want to add that extra Pop to any of my outfits!

| Makeda's Eye-Openers |
|
|
Makeda’s Eye-Openers
Today’s eye-opener comes to us from the ever so fashionable Makeda. All she needs in her life is a little Angelina Jolie and a lot of music.
I have been obsessed with this woman since 1995, basically since I was five and I'm 21 years old now.
She is one of the most inspiring individuals in my life besides my mother and grandmother.
From her less than enticing life style to being one of the most desirable
women of the 21st century. I had the pleasure to watch her evolve throughout the years. She is beautiful and smart and has inspired me to become a U.N
ambassador in my later life and has taught me that it was okay to be who I am without whispering these words in my ear. I get really excited when I hear her name and see her face, sort of like when a shopaholic hears about a sample sale.
When I'm not glued to my partial cubicle, 9 times out of 10 I have headphones in my ear.
Music has been a way for me to run into the wild, jump off a cliff, and dive into a pool fileld with flowers. Basically, live in my own little world. ^_^
I love how it evokes emotions that I never knew existed.
For every moment that I have encountered, music has always been by my side.
My besftriend and my worst enemy. My Lover and and the food for my soul.
I could not exist if music was never around.
"The eye is the window of the soul, the mouth the door. The intellect, the will, are seen in the eye; the emotions, sensibilities, and affections, in the mouth. The animals look for man's intentions right into his eyes. Even a rat, when you hunt him and bring him to bay, looks you in the eye. Hiram Powers, American sculptor (1805 - 1873)"
When I look at myself in the mirror I like to see everything that I can improve about Makeda. To constantly grow and expand beyond borders that I fantasize about jumping.
I sort of have a weird fascination with snakes. I enjoy the fact that they can shed their skin.
To me it is a phase of rebirth and every night before I go to sleep I look at myself to try and find my soul (Yes, I accepted the fact that I'm "weird" and I embrace it.com.) Sometimes I just feel like I exist and when I have the opportunity to see myself I try to see what other people see. I try to find myself by looking at myself, which is questionable.
It is another reason why I cannot look at people in there eyes for more than three seconds because I feel like there trying to take my soul. LOL not kidding.

Get a sneak peek inside our office and get to know what we’re wearing. This week, we caught up with Bijou and Tiana and snapped some of their vintage pieces. Tiana wore her grandmother’s scarf and Bijou donned a vintage brass bracelet and his signature Jeffrey Campbell boots.

"WOOOOOW!!!! This is unreal! I seriously am in shock. I've been saving for this dress of a bit and now I feel that I've been rewarded for my hard work with this gift. I absolutely love this dress and will be wearing it to a ball this summer for my husbands work. I can't wait until he sees it!!!"

Quote of the Day
“I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they’re right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.”
-Marilyn Monroe

Thank you so much for my dress NewYorkDress. This is my third time shopping with you and it was by far my favorite time (though all were great). This may be the first thing I've won since a spelling bee in elementary school. You've really gave me a big smile that will last for quite some time!

Saturday Do: Hester Street Fair
The Hester Street Fair, which was created by MTV’s Suchin Pak, is back in action from its very long winter break. Its third season began last Saturday and while we missed it, we’ll definitely be visiting this Saturday. The fair boasts a wide array of food and artisan vendors. Stay tuned for our photos of our visit to the fair. If time allows, visit the fair this Saturday and get a little taste of local New York goods.
Where: The corner of Hester and Essex, (F train to East Broadway)
When: Every Saturday from 10 am-6 pm
*Fair runs through October 27

Stain In Touch
With summer peeking its head in, we’ve become quite fond of lip stains. We love them for their high pigment, intense color, light feel and buildable color. Worn alone or with a gloss, these are a few of our favorite stains. Most lip stains can also be worn as a blush, so you’re sure to be blushing in colors as fresh as fruit. Yum.

Summer Hair…While You Sleep
Lately, there’s been a lot of hair talk in our offices. Who uses what shampoo, treatment, conditioner, ombre this, ombre that, extensions; if there’s hair involved, we’re in the thick of it.
Want perfect second-day bed head? Sleep in braided pig tales and wake up with that envious wavy, just-rolled-out-of-bed hair. Your old scrunchies have a hidden use: They can help you get big, bouncy waves. Right after blow-drying, while your hair is still warm, twirl the length around your finger, coil it into a bun, and secure with a soft, fabric-covered scrunchie. Once your hair is cool, take out the scrunchie and you’ll have full waves

Quote of the Day
I beg you, to have patience with everything unresolved in your heart and to try to love the questions themselves as if they were locked rooms or books written in a very foreign language. Don't search for the answers, which could not be given to you now, because you would not be able to live them. And the point is to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps then, someday far in the future, you will gradually, without even noticing it, live your way into the answer.
