Diana Vreeland

dianavreeland

Call it perfect timing or perhaps a calling from one of the fashion world's biggest influences-whatever you do, don't peg Diana Vreeland's The Eye Has To Travel, as just another documentary film. Vreeland's life is a cause for celebration in this fashionable documentary, which features commentary from well known fashion designers, critics, writers and past interviews of Vreeland, herself. Having worked as a a former columnist and editor who worked with Vogue, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Harper's Bazaar, Vreeland was best known for her impeccable sense of stylish direction and for finding beauty in unorthodox subjects. The Eye Has To Travel will be premiere at the MoMa, (Museum of Modern Art) during New York Fashion Week and be released in New York and L.A. theaters on Sept. 21. It looks like Girls Night Out just got a fresh breath of air ladies.

Homecoming Belle

You made it onto your next year of high school-you're juggling new classes, teachers, faces, (perhaps a new crush) and Homecoming! We know the thrill and excitement of Homecoming is like no other and think every girl has the right to be fabulous. So while you're counting down the days on your calendar or iPhone, we're here with four stellar hair and makeup looks that are fresh and oh so perfect for your night out on the town. Take notes ladies!

Georgia Peach: We love Taylor Swift's fresh peachy makeup. You can't go wrong with peach because it can be worn on the lids, cheeks and lips! Swift wore a shimmery peach eye shadow that brought out her baby blue eyes, a bronzed cheek and a slightly glossy peachy tint on her lips. If you want to add a little oomph to your look, add some falsies to make your eyes pop and apply a coat of waterproof mascara.

Taylor's Look: Sephora Creme Prism Eye shadow in Flash Dance , Covergirl Lash Blast Waterproof Mascara, Covergirl Queen Bronzer and Covergirl Wetslick Lipgloss in Peach and Sephora False Eyelashes

Hollywood Dame: Adele's look is perfection. No muss, no fuss, just glamour. Her siren red lips, black liner and luscious long dramatic lashes are absolutely gorgeous. Apply a natural cream shadow to your lids to matify and add contour. This look is perfect for the daring divas who want to be noticed. A little Hollywood chic never hurt a gal.

Adele's look: Nars Lipstick in Jungle Red, Sephora's Black Liquid Eyeliner and Rimmel Eye duo in Smoky Brun

Pretty In Pink: What girl doesn't love pink? It's flirty, fresh and youthful. You can never go wrong with pink lips, doll. We love the idea of Rihanna's bright pink matte lip and midnight blue pointed eyeliner. These marry each other perfectly.

Rihanna's look: Mac Lipstick in Girl About Town, Covergirl Liquiline Blast Eyeliner in Blue Bloom and Sephora's Silk Blush and Bronzer Combo

Dark Princess: Incorporate one of this Fall's biggest colors into your Homecoming look: berry colored lips! Kate Bosworth's look is vampy chic. She pulled off a gorgeous dark berry matte lip by keeping the rest of her makeup simple. This color trend looks good on all skin types, you just have to make sure you choose the right hue.

Dark Fall

Alright kids, we've been scoping out the streets, reading the zines and our inner teen is excited for the changing of the seasons. This Fall, dark plums, navy and black are all grown up and we dig everything about it. Before you have visions of hoards of women parading around in black lipstick and spiked collars, breathe easy. The dark colors we're fawning over are redefined, sophisticated and so classy, your mother might even approve of them. Think Siouxsie & the Banshees meets the runway.

Rebels With A Fashionable Cause

While many of us marvel at fashion spreads in magazines, it's hard for us to imagine some of our favorite designers starting anywhere but the drawing tables of design school. We were surprised to find out that some of the most notable designers never went to fashion design school, in fact some never even intended on designing. But, alas they did and have since become household names. We're taking a look at the men and women who ended up designing for the catwalk sans fashion school. It seems these talented few were destined to become designers with or without fashion school under their belts.

Runway Report: Rolling Stone

A well designed gown can stand on its own. But what if you changed the entire course of your look with a little rock 'n' roll inspiration? We're referring to Christian Siriano's Fall 2012 collection which featured models who strutted down the catwalk like punk rock goddesses. Siriano's collection is a perfect marriage of elegance and grunge. Every woman loves a little rebellion in her life and her closet is no exception. We love the idea of adding edgy accessories to a feminine gown. How about some studs, sparkle, leather, chains and spikes to change up your look? We recreated one of Siriano's looks with some of our very own pieces-feel free to change up your own look this Fall. Rock on, babe!

Savannah Lathem Writes for NewYorkDress!

Hello NewYorkDress Fans!
It was such a wonderful experience attending The 33rd Annual Young Artist Awards in Hollywood, CA. I was nominated for the Best Lead Performance in the Film Category. As always, I turned to NewYorkDress.com to find my dress for the event.  They worked closely with me and found the perfect Red Carpet look.

I am 14-years old, 5"4, 99 lbs, and I often struggle to find designers that have the right look for me. After all, I don't want to look too much like a "little girl" or too much like an "adult", but NewYorkDress made it easy. After understanding my height, measurements, and complexion, they immediately found me the perfect dress, Sherri Hill 8422. It was a match made in heaven!  It made me feel and look like a Princess on my magical night.  I felt so confident and age appropriate. I loved the way it flowed with the layers and ruffles, giving me the young, fresh, vibrant look that I needed.  I also loved that it was fitted around my hips and sparkled with sequins, which helped give me the "teenage-edgy style" that I wanted.
Savannah Lathem in Sherri Hill

Girls, I know that homecoming is just around the corner and I hope you know that you can always count on NewYorkDress.com to meet your fashion needs. They will help you find the designer look that fits YOU.  There are 7-billion people in the world, but there is only one beautiful YOU!  I say, be of yourself and don't compromise for anything less than what you are looking for.

I am so looking forward to NewYorkDress.com fitting me for the "California Solo" Premiere, starring Robert Carlyle (Once Upon a Time).  I play Robert Carlyle's daughter, Arianwen, who is also a typical teenager like me.  California Solo will be in theaters this fall.

I am also honored to write blogs for NewYorkDress.com and I am looking forward to hearing from you. So please check back and let me know what you think about the latest teen-tween styles, cosmo needs, and fashion accessories.

Two In One

One bridal trend we're really loving is the convertible gown. In the past couple seasons, bridal gowns have really been revolutionized with minor tweaks that make the wedding gown a bit more personal. One trend that we saw on the Spring 2013 runways was the convertible wedding gown. When brides think of their wedding dresses, it seems they want more. We love the idea of a two in one gown that offers two completely different looks. We fell in love with designs from the likes of Reem Acra who turned out beautiful and functional convertible wedding gowns. Get the best of both worlds in a convertible gown-starting off with a long and glowing gown for the ceremony and ending as a glamorous and chic cocktail dress that allows for mobility during the reception. What do you think of convertible wedding dresses?

Perfect Fit

Mar Saura dropped jaws at the 2012 Global Gift Gala in an blush and metallic beaded gown by Oscar de la Renta. The gown was fitted throughout the bodice and featured intricate beading and a light and whimsical feathered skirt. We love the movement this dress provided and matched it with our Alyce 2158. This gown features a strapless sweetheart neckline, crystal beading along the bodice and a dropped waistline. The fully feathered skirts adds a dramatic flounce to your every stride! Pair this gorgeous gown with crystal drop earrings and a jeweled bracelet, retro waves and a dramatic lip.

Want some insight on this Fall's color forecast? Pantone laid out a nice arrangement of warm and cool colors for us to choose from. Three of our favorite colors we can't wait to outfit ourselves in are Olympian Blue, Pink Flambe and Tangerine Tango. Don't be afraid to incorporate a little bit of these hues into your wardrobe-whether it be a statement piece, an entire outfit or smaller accessories. Which color will you make your own this Fall? These beautiful saturated colors aren't just for your wardrobe-they're also perfectly fabulous and wearable for your lips, eyes, nails and cheeks.

Beauty Myths

This week, we're tackling two more beauty myths that have been eluding many of us for years. If you're like most women, you may have been feed many a beauty facts from family, friends and fashion magazines. First up: the one undergarment that makes a world of a difference: the bra.

beautymyths

Is wearing a bra to bed harmful to your health?

According to research by Dr. Amber Guth of NYU, it goes one of two ways; either you wear a bra or you don't. Either your breasts are supported for eight hours at night or they're not. Gravity, pregnancy and breastfeeding are the three biggest factors in changes to your breasts.

Does tweezing hair make it thicker?

As women, there have always been a slew of warnings about our hair-whether it's on our head or on our legs. What about the hair on our faces? Does tweezing actually make the hair on our faces come back thicker? According to trichologists, tweezing doesn't change the actual texture of your hair. Hormones are actualy more at play with the change in thickness and texture of the hair that grows back.

Black and Blue

Two of this Fall's upcoming color trends are black and blue-think a mash up of royal blues, peacock, ocean and cerulean blues. This cool and mysterious color combination is perfect for day or night and was showcased by designers including Preen, DKNY and Carolina Herrera during NYFW 12'. We love the idea of a dark cat eye and red lip against these cool colors. Tadashi's latest collection includes many styles featuring these beautiful colors.

How To Choose Your Dress

So you're engaged; after the champagne and handfuls of congratulations have worn off-reality sets in. Now what? You may have had your ideal of a perfect wedding dress,(or two) but before you hit the ground running, take note of a couple tips.

-What time of the year will your wedding be taking place?

-Where will your reception be taking place, (i.e. a ball gown dress might not be appropriate for an outdoor reception)

-Will you be wearing a store bought dress or a custom made dress? Perhaps you'll even be wearing a vintage dress that needs some tailoring done to it. A custom made dress usually takes about four months from start to finish so it's important that you give yourself enough time to make changes.

-Set a budget: remember that you don't have to spend a fortune in order to have a beautiful dress. Do give yourself some wiggle room just in case you have to spend a little extra on tailoring, beading etc.

Your Silhouette

-Above all else, you should always feel beautiful in your dress and part of that is due in part to the fit and style of wedding dress. -Stay true to yourself and what looks best on you. Perhaps there's a part of your body you want to conceal or highlight. Work with your tailor to make this happen.

1)The Ball Gown: this style was originally introduced by Queen Victoria. This style works on women of average height and flatters fuller and hourglass figures. You can choose a heavy fabric which will give your dress body and weight or a lighter fabric for a weightless effect.

2) The A-line: this dress follows the shape of an A from the narrow part of the bodice to the outer edges of the skirt. This style is very flattering and elongating to different body shapes.

3.The Empire Waist: this dress featured a high waist and is usually cropped at the bust line. It is mostly flattering to women with a smaller chest-but not necessarily for a woman with a larger bust.

4. Mermaid Cut: This dress is fitted throughout the bodice and flares out at the knee or a little lower than the knee. This style is flattering to the hourglass figure and is equally flattering to a woman who wants more body

5.Sheath Dress: This dress is perfect if you are comfortable showing your curves. It fits close to the body-it is perfect for women who have narrow hips and are taller. Avoid this style of dress is you have wide hips and narrow shoulders.

Blow Off Steam

How about blowing some steam off like Anne Hathaway? The Dark Knight Rises actress has said that a strict regimen of steaming her face with a warm towel a couple times a week improves her complexion. Did you know that applying a moderate amount of steam and warmth onto your face can help you have better looking skin? After your washing your face at night, it's best to apply a warm face towel onto your face for a couple of minutes. This will help open up your pores, letting dirt, oil and debris escape. This also helps your skin reap the benefits of any face mask or serum you use. Follow the steam regimen for one to four times a week.

*Tip: applying a few drops of peppermint or tea tree oil onto the steaming face towel will have a calming and toning effect.

Mirror, Mirror On The Wall

Here are some findings for you to ponder: a study conducted by UK brand Simple Skincare, revealed that the average woman looks into a mirror at least eight times at their work place and about fifty percent of the women, (2,000 in total) don't leave their house without a compact mirror and look into an average of 10 times per day.

Now, a new article in The New York Times coined the trend, "mirror fasting," which refers to the practice of not using a mirror at all-or at least weening yourself off of using one. What were the findings? According to the article, 'mirror fasting' helps you take the focus off of yourself. The study also found that women who partook in the study found themselves more 'serene' and with a higher self esteem.

Do you think you could go a day without looking into the mirror?

Making Waves

Some of this Fall's trends have been referred to as 'grandma chic' by fashion critics around the world, meaning of course, a resurgence of pin curls and finger waves. If you're 'over' the slew of sleek updos, these romantic hair dos that took the world by storm in the 1920s and 1930s might be fun to try. In fact, your grandmothers or great aunts probably wore these wondrous and breathtaking dos. Do you dig the do on these celebs?

Light As A Feather

It's ok to get your feathers ruffled this Fall because these princess like feathers are back in a big way. Feathers were front and center in runway shows like Marchesa, Alexander McQueen,(which featured a fully feathered froth), Zuhair Murad and Louis Vuitton. There was plenty of intricate embellishments laced with delicate feathers-something that seems straight up out of a dream. This Fall,  float in beautiful feather clad pieces and accessories.

Great Lengths

Victoria Beckham can do no wrong in our eyes. The mother of four has been on the fashion radar since her days as a Spice Girl-but it was a recent conversion to notable designer that made us take note of her. Beckham wore a long sleeved black gown with shoulder embellishments. Beckham paired her glamorous look with a slicked back updo, black nail polish and a smokey eye. Our match for Beckham's gown is Jovani 9608 which features a high neckline, a long polished silhouette and studded and stoned embellishments at the shoulders.

Miley's Choppy Do

It's almost a right of passage these days in Hollywood; chopping your luscious locks off and sporting a shorter, choppier do. Newly engaged actress and singer Miley Cyrus sported a super light blonde pixie cut stating that on her Twitter that she'd never felt more herself.

What do you think of Miley's new hair do?

Make the most of your physique with a long, white gown like the one actress Ali Later wore this Valentino dress to a non profit event in L.A. Larter accessorized her look with a sleek bob, fresh makeup and turquoise drop earrings. We think this white gown elongates Larter's physique-making the most of her already slim figure. Ladies with hourglass figures, don't shy away from this style. Our Nika 6059 is similar to Larter's gown and features a sleek, long lines. This dress is alluring, dramatic and chic.

Clash of the Dresses

Perhaps this has happened to you-maybe you've even had a close call: you walk into the venue and spot someone else wearing the same dress you are. Sure you knew your dress wasn't probably the only one of its kind, but you didn't really expect for someone else to be wearing the same dress to the same event, right? Why take chances? We recently discovered Dress Spy an online site that keeps track of what your wedding or party guests are wearing the day of the event to avoid dress clash. You start off by setting up your own private event page and have all your guests send in photos of the dress and any details about it. Sure, you may have wanted your ensemble to be a complete surprise, but we think it's better to be safe than sorry.

It's no secret that bandage dresses have been a hot item for a couple years-but something about the contrasting blue hues in this Herve Leger bandage dress has us falling in love with the bandage dress all over again. Stephanie Pratt wore a strapless version to an MTV event while Carmen Electra wore a one shoulder version to a red carpet event. Our Shailk Shail K KK3815 resembles this designer favorite-features sleeveless straps and a beautiful cut out back.

Fashion In Film

It starts off with a leading lady-she takes us along for the ride, whether she's a heroin, a hopeless romantic, a working woman or in the midst of a life changing event. We end up falling in love with the woman, following her through the scenes, at times, living vicariously through her fashion sense. Girls will be girls. We're looking back at some of the best fashion moments in films.

Spotlight: Nail Polish

Those ten fingers your parents anxiously counted as soon as you were born have experienced a sudden spotlight in the last year. Yes, it's true-those 10 dainty little fingers, which you may have only tended to once a month or every other month are now in focus. Some experts attribute this 'nail craze' to the 'Lipstick Effect,' which refers to the phenomenon of women buying more cosmetic products during times of economic hardship. In other words, the lower the DOW, the bigger our makeup palette. Have your doubts? Studies by the University of Texas at San Antonio and Arizona State University suggest that women turn to the uplifting power of cosmetics to help land a man who is, for lake of a better term, rolling in the Benjamins. Do you think this is true for you or anyone you know? While you ponder that question, here's an interesting fact: nail polish sales have risen an astounding 70 percent in the last year. To be precise, nail polish colors have risen 70 percent while top and base coats have risen 100 percent. That being said, it's no wonder why cosmetic companies such as Loreal and M.A.C. have released major nail polish campaigns and why nail art is as common as lip balm.

Think Pink

Perhaps it all started with Kay Thompson's performance of Think Pink in the feature film, 'Funny Face' in which Audrey Hepburn stars. Thompson shouted about pink being the one and only color from then on and we borrowed her fascination for the hue for our pink wedding theme. To avoid your wedding from looking like a cotton candy explosion-pick and choose and include a variety of hues and tones in your decor and accessories. Add brighter tones for the decor and soft baby pinks in your dress and makeup.

Florence Welch was spotted wearing this beautiful Spanish style full length tiered gown by Tadashi Shoji. The Florence and the Machines front woman kept her accessories to a minimal-a few rings on her left hand and maroon colored nails and fresh makeup. We absolutely love the way the English beauty made the dress come alive. Tadashi 9R980LX elongates the body and will no doubt become a classic statement piece in your wardrobe.

Curls For Days

We love a good blowout just as much as the next girl, but we can't deny the absolute appeal of the curl. We love the lot of it-the tight curls, the waves, the bountiful coils and long spirals. Curls are absolutely romantic and carefree and for that, we salute the curly headed leading ladies who've worn their curls proudly.

curlyhair
Tips

1. If you have curly hair, show your curls some love with moisture. Curly hair becomes drier faster. Look for shampoo and conditioners without SLS and parabens, which tend to dry your hair out. Use a conditioning mask at least once a week and leave on for about 10 minutes before rinsing out.

2. Curly hair is always thirsty-quench your curls with a light leave in conditioner that contains coconut or avocado oil. To tame your frizz, but not weigh down your curls, we love a good serum. Our favorites include Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Wild Ginger and Biosilk Serum. A dime sized works wonders.

3. Wash your hair every other day. Washing it everyday will dry out your hair and remove natural oils that act as natural hair conditioners.

4. Leaving your hair to dry naturally, (if you have the time) is best because you avoid the frizz that tends to come with using a blow dryer.

5. Keratin is a super effective product which is the key component to the structure of your hair. With styling, change of weather and dying, you loose the keratin in your hair. Restore keratin by getting a keratin treatment which will soften your hair and make it easier to style.

Bridesmaids Restyled

For those of you who've faced the bridesmaid dilemma-you know what it's like to love the dress and leave it in a garment bag at the end of your closet. For those of you who haven't been a bridesmaid, take not-just in case the opportunity ever rises in the future. We're here to let you know that bridesmaids' dresses can be worn again, can be restyled; in short, there is life for these dresses long after the nuptials. During our wedding shoot, our stylist Jonah restyled Bari Jay 351 by adding a loose knit sweater, a chunky rose gold watch, neon rope bracelets and some floral Doc Martens. After being restyled, the dress transformed itself into a maxi skirt, (it can be our secret).

*Tip: Don't be afraid to incorporate casual pieces from your wardrobe, like an oversized blazer, a boyfriend button up, sandals or denim jacket. You'll be surprised where a little creativity can take you.

Stain Be Gone

Makeup stains are a fact of life. While your makeup may look amazing on your skin-we know the feeling when a smudge occurs. You suddenly start to mourn your beautiful piece of clothing because you don't think you'll ever manage to remove the stain. Think again.

makeupstains

Lipstick: If your lipstick's gotten all over your clothes, don't pout. Instead, spritz your kiss imprint with hair spray and let sit for 10 minutes. Gently dab with a sponge and throw in the wash. If your clothing is dry-clean only, try using a piece of tape to transfer the stain away. You can also use baby powder, chalk, or baking soda to remove oil- and wax-based lipsticks.

Eyeliner: Did someone leave a note on your mirror in eyeliner? (Believe us, it does happen). Apply salt to remove the marks before using standard cleaner (this trick also works for lipstick stains on wine glasses).

Waterproof mascara: For long-lasting makeup formulations, try blotting the stain with makeup remover.

Foundation: This one is our least favorite stain! Pretreat powder and liquid-foundation spills with shaving cream or shampoo. Both of these toiletries have cleaning agents that should break through the stain before you wash.

Self-tanner: To reverse self-tanner stains left on sheets or clothing, first rinse the affected area under cold water. Use a sponge and dish detergent, working on the spot from the outside in, to cut the oil in the tanning formula. Peroxide works to remove the orange tones from the fabric (but make sure to spot-check first to ensure the fabric's color won't lift).

Stay Gold

We dreamt in gold and it was brilliant, to say the least. To those who say there's a thin line between fantasy and reality-we say forget about it. When planning your wedding and researching wedding themes, it's best to stick to the 'anything goes' philosophy. So if you're dreaming of something different, something a little 'out there,' we dare you to think of a gold wedding. Whether you add speckled bits of gold, accents or drape your entire nuptials in it-stay gold.

Sheer Panels

We fell head over heels with Stella McCartney's side panel madness in her fall 2011 collection. Our jaws dropped when we spotted Gwen Stefani wearing a sultry body suit with side panels. Kim Kardashian also sported a similar creation by McCartney-except in the form of a polka dotted body conscious dress. We love the hint of skin that runs down the side of the body-and while this dress definitely isn't for the faint of heart, we say run with it! Our Allure 6685 has a slimming effect on any body type as it highlights the natural contours of a woman's body while minimizing any problem areas.

Bridesmaid 101

One of the biggest dilemmas in a wedding, aside from finding your perfect dress is finding the bridesmaids' dresses. It's stressful enough finding your own gown; how do you make the right decision for a handful of women? When it comes to bridesmaids, should you let them choose their own dresses or is there a way to reach a happy medium?

How about the LBD,(little black dress)as bridesmaid dresses? You can never go wrong in this timeless classic. Think of black bridesmaid dresses as blank canvases where your bridesmaids can really create their own look with fun accessories, (heels, jewelry, belt/scarves and makeup). Remember that you while you do want some sense of uniformity, it's also important to give your bridesmaids a sense of self.

Mori Lee 20367, ($152) and Mori Lee 658, ($144)

What about a different color for each bride? Choose a couple colors that compliment your wedding theme and give your bridesmaids the option to choose a color. We love the idea of fresh color in chic and simple styles. Alred Sung is one of our favorite designer to do this with.

Alfred Sung 542, ($184) and Alfred Sung 534, ($184)

alfredsung534

We also like the idea of keeping one half of your bridesmaids in one style/length of dress and the other half in a different style and length. This way, there's still that sense of uniformity and variety. Find out which lengths and styles your bridesmaids are comfortable wearing and find a two happy mediums. Wtoo Bridesmaids is perfect for added variety!

Like Marilyn

The 50th anniversary of Marilyn Monroe's death just passed and the truth is, it seems that the public's fascination with the porcelain skinned and red lipped blonde has only grown throughout the years. Whether it was her breathy voice, dreamy eyes or her all around charm, we're looking back at other female stars who have taken a cue from Ms. Monroe. Regardless of the renditions, it's become quite clear that red lipstick and a famous white billowing dress will always be synonymous with Marilyn Monroe.

Red Velvet

This upcoming fall is promising to be a very 'touchy-feely' kind of season-with all sorts of textures making the scene. Whispers of 'grandma chic' have been rustling about the streets and from the looks of it, fabrics, such as heavy tweeds and ultra rich velvet are on the horizon. We can't wait to get our hands on these inviting fabrics. A velvet revolution hit the fall 2012 runways, with designers like Gucci, Carven and Lanvin putting their own spin on this romantic fabric. We spotted L'Wren Scott's red velvet gown and were instantly charmed with it's deep red color and long and lean silhouette. Our Tadashi 3X1046Lis an uncanny match-with a longer, more dramatic hemline and beautiful deep lace inset at the back. We love the idea of a sleek ponytail, fresh skin and a deep red lip with this exquisite gown.

Perfume Etiquette

Perfume Etiquette

Finding your signature scent can be a very important decision as it's indicative of who you are. What does your scent say about you and how do you go about choosing yours? Here are a couple tips for choosing the best fragrance that suits you and how to make it work for you.

perfume

-You might want to give yourself a little more time between fragrance purchases. You must realize that perfume dries differently on everyone's skin. When you are searching for a new fragrance, one of the worst things you can actually do is to douse your forearm with dozens of perfumes because it'll be harder for you to distinguish one perfume from another.

-The best thing for you to do is to take a small spritz bottle filled with cold coffee. Make sure to use the provided tester strips to test out the perfume so you don't leave with a headache. In between testing perfumes, spray some coffee onto a test strip to cleanse your oratory palette.

-Once you narrow down the perfumes to one or two favorites spray one wrist with one scent and the other with a second scent. Work with a specialist or someone at the counter to let you know what notes are in each perfume.

-Ask for a sample of each perfume and take it home with you-over the course of one or two days, you'll discover which scent works best with your body chemistry.

Where to spray your perfume:

-The best places to spray your perfume are your wrists, nape of your neck, small of your back and the cascade of your knees. These areas are all perfect because they create natural body heat and release your scent perfectly throughout the day. Avoid rubbing together your wrists because this will change the way your perfume smells.

-Do not spray perfume over any fabrics because it can ruin them and the scent never really lasts. It's best to always apply fragrance onto your skin.

Nail Salon 101

Ladies, we know summer's all about strutting around parading the hottest mani and pedi and that's fine-we're into it. There is one thing we need to address, however: what to watch out for in your nail salon. Just how clean is your nail lady practices and tools? Before you get tight lipped on this one, we want to let you know it's time to speak up and do a little snooping-incognito style, of course.

manicure

What To Watch Out For

1. As crazy as it sounds, 'death by pedicure,' has occurred in the past and it involves a flesh eating staph infections. Tools that are reused, although cleaned after each use, can still host infections. Your best bet is to bring your own tools.

2.Does the nail salon look clean? If the nail salon looks dirty, chances are their nail practices aren't up to par as well. Better to be safe than sorry, doll.

3.Don't stick your feet into a whirlpool sink unless it's clean-serious bacteria and molds can grow in tubs if not cleaned properly. Don't be afraid to ask for it to be cleaned in front of your eyes.

4.Make sure that your manicurist washes her hands before even touching your skin. What you don't know can and will hurt you. Ask him/her to wash their hands where you can see them. They can still be carrying bacteria from their previous customer's nails.

5.Nail Salons don't turn customers away. That means even customers with fungal infections are given full manicures and pedicures. More reason for you to be cautious!

6. Salons swap out bottles all the time. They fill high end lotion bottles, cleansers and treatments with generic brands. This way, they are still overcharging you without you even knowing it!

Rainy Day Blues

This past summer in New York has been-well-not really too much of a summer at all. We all experienced a little more rain and humidity than we care for. So during the months you thought you could actually be carefree, you spent trying to dodge the curbside puddles and battling the frizz, poof and melting makeup. So bring on the storms New York, we've got a couple beauty tips that'll have you singing in the rain.

rainyday

1.Cloudy skies are a clear indicator that rain is in the vicinity, so it's important that you always have a spare bonnet or umbrella in your purse. Keeping the rain out of your hair and face is essential.

2. Make sure that you set your eyebrows with a little bit of gel or wax and opt for cream shadow,(it has longer staying power). As for makeup, use a light foundation and always use setting powder to help it stay on. Finish off with some finishing spray or rose water. Remember, you don't want to look like cake face.

3. Waterproof mascara is a must. We love and use it anytime of the year, but it's especially useful on rainy days. Be sure to also carry a travel size baby oil and q tips if you happen to have any smears.

4.There's no use in straightening your hair on a rainy day. We suggest a dime size amount of anti-frizz serum and either leaving your hair down au naturale or gathering it in a top knot for a no fuss look.

5. Work with the hair texture you have. The moisture and wetness can actually be good for curly haired ladies, since curls tend to lack more moisture.

6.Always carry a pack of pocket tissues and oil blotting sheets for after the rain hits. Blot away all your worries.

Lip Stickers

Call them lip stickers, temporary lip tattoos or the latest lip craze-truth is, we don't quite know what to think of them. These temporary lip stickers can last anywhere from 4-8 hours depending on your skin type. The lips are priced from $7-$10, (you get a pack of three) and already some famous faces have jumped on the trend. Allure even referred to them as 'the future of lipstick.' It seems the major attraction to these tattoos is the fact that you can actually wear prints, glitter and fun designs without worrying that it'll smudge or wear off.

Beauty And The Buck

A recent study by the YWCA titled, Beauty At Any Cost revealed that on average, women spend about $100 a month on cosmetics and beauty products-totaling around $1,200 a year. We're not going to argue with this one-with beauty shops in every corner of the city and magazine columns dedicated to the newest, longest lasting beauty product-it's hard to refrain from shelling out the big bucks for such products. So while we may not stop spending on cosmetics altogether, we compiled a list of products we've personally used-both high end and drugstore cosmetics-to help you save some green. Sure we love the high end products, but truth be told, we've tried all of the following products and found that the drugstore finds, work just as well than the high end products and save you some cash. Take your savings and put it away for a rainy day, sugar.

N.Y.C. Brush On Brow Kit, $3 vs. Benefit Brow Zings, $30

The NYC version works just as well to help you get defined brows. A little setting wax and colored powder goes a long way! Not to mention, the super small and precise tweezers!

browkits

Super Stay Maybelline Stain Gloss, $9 vs. Tarte Lipsurgence, $24

The Maybelline stain has a beautiful wand that is perfect for precise application. It doesn't dry your lips out-in fact, it adds moisture but isn't glossy. Stays on for hours on end!

lipstain

Wet N Wild Matte Lipstick, $2 vs. Nars Matte Lipstick, $25

The Wet N Wild matte lipstick is a true beauty find. The colors are absolutely vibrant and long lasting. Our only suggestion: Moisturize beforehand because matte color defines any flakiness.

mattelipstick

Maybelline Super Stay concealer, $9 vs. Makeup Forever Concealer,$29

Maybelline's concealer is heaven sent. There's no need to reapply-it doesn't cake, smudge or sweat off. It lasts all day and looks natural!

concealer

Almay Intensifying Mascara, $6 vs. Lancome Hypnose Doll Lashes, $26

strengthens and thickens your lashes-no crud or clumping. It adds a hint of sparkle to make your eyes pop-we love this so much!

mascara

Rimmel Bronzer, $4 vs. Sephora Bronzer Collection, $15

Rimmel's bronzer doesn't look fake-it gives you a sun kissed glow that lasts all day. You can choose a matte version or a bronzer with a hint of shimmer.

High Shine

Ashley Tisdale was spotted wearing this Boutique Ginger mini sequined dress last month at the Rock Of Ages premiere in Los Angeles. Tisdale paired her mini dress with a pair of Christian Louboutin black booties. She complimented her look with middle parted straight hair and a bright pink lip. Boutique Ginger boasts a body conscious silhouette, sheer decolletage and a fully sequined bodice-what more would you want in a mini dress?

Fall Makeup

Yes dears, summer came and went in the blink of an eye. While it's not officially fall yet, it's so close, we can feel it. So how will fall translate onto our makeup palette? Relax doll, these looks are more wearable than you think. It's time to take a peek inside this fall's makeup trends. Pick and choose what you will-make it your own.

Deep berry colored lips: To pull this look off, keep the rest of your makeup rather simple. Fresh, clean skin and a coat of black mascara are perfect compliments to this bold lip.

Defined brows: It might be time to let go of the tweezers and let your brows grow a little thicker. Define them with a brush, brow gel and let your eyes do all the talking. Natural looking eyebrows are youthful.

Multi-toned eyes: Bring some color to those pretty peepers with bright, jewel toned shadows, (jades, emeralds, purples, yellows, blues) and liners. We love the look of fun and youthful multi-tonal colors on the eyes. Keep the rest of your makeup fresh and light, so that your eyes don't clash with the rest of your look.

Natural Palette: The 'imperfect' look is in. This means luminous skin and dewy natural looking lips. This is a perfect look for days when you can't be bothered to sift through your makeup bag.

Chic Bride Dos

If there's one topic that's always buzzing around our offices-it's hair. We talk about it all; from the length, color, texture, style-bridging between fantasy and reality. We can only imagine the strain a wedding can place on a woman and on her hair. Because the pressure's on every last strand to perform its best on the day of the nuptials- we thought we'd round up five sweet, headache-free styles you can wear after your wedding day.

Little Black Dress

Little black dresses have been making a comeback on the runways, red carpets and sidewalks everywhere. While this timeless classic has recently been redefined time and time again, it was Karolina Kurkova, who floored us with her sexy cut-out mini during the Cannes Film Festival. Since then, we haven't stopped obsessing over this chic wardrobe staple. The possibilities are endless with a little black dress. Our multifaceted collection has a style for every occasion- whether you're looking for a cocktail, sparkly, cap sleeved, or belted little black dress. While any of our black dresses look beautiful on their own, we treated them like blank canvases for our shoot and accessorized them with sparkling chandelier earrings, a rhinestone cuff and a metallic clutch. How will you dress yours up?
