As we cruise through New York Fashion Week we can’t help but notice the star trends emerge. While there will always be room for florals in spring, this season designers have decided to focus on the body by going sporty with a feminine edge. We’re talking racer back ball gowns and aerodynamically fit parkas. Ready to get physical? Here’s what we saw on the runways thus far.

On your mark, get set, go! Let’s hit the races with Alexander Wang. For his athletically chic S/S ‘12 show at Pier 94, famous face models Frankie Rayder, Liya Kebede and Hilary Rhoda let their tough-girl expressions accessorize the sports-driven collection. Race car stripes, perforated leather and miles of mesh were accentuated with both streamlined silhouettes and loose-fitting jersey. But it’s not all dark and dirty. Wang added a botanical print for a leisurely finish. Who will wear it? Alexa Chung, Rihanna and Zoe Kravitz.
On the flip side Jason Wu brings us pretty and prim for his S/S 12 collection. Wu’s girl, elegantly classic with a playful twist will continue the ladylike trend in the form of peplum skirts, petal prints, and ballerina pink. To infuse his feminine collection with an unexpected spin, he collaborated with graffiti artist KAWS for the ubiquitous flower petal print splashed on his pieces. The overall look: ethereal yet grounded with modern girl charm. Who will wear it? Diane Kruger, Lea Michele and First Lady Obama.
Back at The Theatre of Lincoln Center, Monique Lhuillier married the two themes of sporty and feminine in her S/S ‘12 collection. The red-carpet-friendly gown designer brought an edge to her dresses with punchy color blocking and touches of leather, lace and geometric prints. The models, fierce with slicked back pony tails and electric blue eye liner stretched to the temples were fully in charge as they pranced the runway in Manola Blahniks. Except for the moment when one nearly toppled over her canary yellow gown—not once, but three times! Who will wear it? Mandy Moore, LeAnn Rhimes, Anne Hathaway.
