The Hottest Color Trends We're Seeing for Fall 2018
In the natural world, fall is a feast of color. It’s, therefore, fitting that this season’s fashion trends don’t shy away from the boldest of hues, all influenced by nature’s own color palette. Straight from the fashion industry’s most reliable trend barometers, we bring you the hottest colors for fall 2018. As you look for the perfect dress to wear for your formal event this fall, take inspiration from the rich, varied and sometimes surprising selection of colors that are making fashion headlines this season.
Rich Reds
A few varieties of red are on the radar this season. Vogue Magazine has identified red as a top trend, while Pantone has named Red Pear and Valiant Poppy as shades to look out for. Both take their inspiration from natural autumnal hues. Check out this dress by Beside Couture that matches Pantone’s bright and warm Valiant Poppy, while this two-piece evening outfit by Dave and Johnny matches the darker, wine-colored Red Pear.
Two Kinds of Purple
A few shades of purple have been singled out for this season. Ultra Violet is Pantone’s color of the year and in addition to that, Crocus Petal is a trending color for the season. This Ultra Violet two-piece creation by Ellie Wilde is bang on trend, combining rich color with a sassy pair of mini-shorts under a long, sheer A-line skirt, paired with a halter-neck crop top. Crocus Petal is a much paler variety of purple, closer to a pastel hue.
Nature’s Blues
Pantone highlights Nebulas Blue, which resembles the rich, dark blue of a twilight sky. This high halter-necked gown by Milano Formals and this short-sleeved gown by Beside Couture offer two very different ways of showing off this trend.
Pantone also names Sargasso Sea, which is a dark navy blue that can be used as an alternative to black. This gown by Clarisse and this dress by Feriani show how well this deep shade of blue suit evening wear.
Bold Yellows
For a splash of bold color, this season’s curry yellow (named by Vogue) equates to Pantone’s Ceylon Yellow. These are a deep mustard hue similar to this formal gown by MNM Couture. A paler alternative that’s still on trend is Pantone’s Limelight, as in this asymmetrical gown by Beside Couture.
Earthy Browns
Those drawn to more muted colors can take inspiration from the in-season browns Pantone has identified: Almond Buff and Meerkat. Almond Buff is a camel-colored brown that may not be the first to spring to mind when imagining evening glamor. However, it’s used to elegant effect in this gown by MNM Couture.
Meerkat is a warm, almost bronze-toned brown that, once again, may not be high on the radar when considering formal wear. This gown, also by MNM couture, shows the potential of this shade of brown.
Classic Orange
Orange is a classic fall color, Pantone’s nod to this is the deep, warm Russet Orange we see reflected in the changing leaves of the season. This cap-sleeved, V-necked gown by Beside Couture is a rich hue that many naturally associate with autumn.
Unusual Greens
Two very different varieties of green are on trend this fall, according to Pantone. Both of these greens offer interesting and not-often-seen shades.
Martini Olive is an earthy shade with brown tones, as this floor-length sequined gown by Mac Duggal. Quetzal Green has blue tones and is similar to a dark turquoise of the kind you might find in an exotic bird. This fluid and flowing gown by Sherri Hill and this regal, column-silhouette dress by Cameron Blake show how this color translates into evening wear.
Contrasting Pinks
Pantone has singled out contrasting hues of pink for this season. Mellow Rose is the pale, understated pink of this unforgettable off-the-shoulder gown by Terani. At the other end of the spectrum, bold and close to red, is Pink Peacock, a deep pink perfect for this dramatic halter-neck gown by Blush.
Creamy White (Tofu)
The on-trend variety of white this season is what Pantone calls Tofu, which is a creamy nature-influenced version of the color, as in this gown by Portia and Scarlett. Tofu works beautifully on its own, or paired with the other trends of the season.
